Abstract
231,923. Woods, R. Dec. 13, 1923. Vacuum tubes. - A thermionic valve holder consists of a block of insulating material, such as vulcanite, with holes receiving the valve legs, and, for each hole; a contact member extending laterally through the block, the inner end of the contact or a part resiliently attached thereto being arranged to extend into the hole so as to make contact with the leg. As shown in Fig. 3 each contact consists of a tubular member 6 recessed to receive a steel ball 8, which is pressed outwards by a spring 7 and retained by a burr. The contacts are mounted in lateral holes in the block 1, Fig. 2 so that the balls project into the corresponding holes 5 for the legs. An enlarged head 11 on the contact has a milled periphery engaging with the block. Connection with a lead is made by means of a tag 10 secured by a screw 9. In a modification, each contact is screwed into the block, and is provided with a lock-nut and with a nut for securing a lead, or the lead may be soldered in an axial recess. The block may be used as a jig for making the position of the holes 14 on a panel 4, and the holes 14 may be enlarged so as to accommodate the lead wires soldered to the legs. According to the Provisional Specification, a telescopic contact may be used instead of a ball.
