Abstract

230,572. Austin, G., Macfarlane, J. C., and Macfarlane, W. A. Dec. 27, 1923. Exciting. - The field winding of a constantcurrent motor having fixed brushes is connected in a circuit derived from the main constant-current supply, in which circuit is also connected in opposition the armature of an auxiliary dynamoelectric machine driven by the main motor, the field winding of the auxiliary machine being connected in series with the motor armature. The field winding 6, Fig. 1, of the motor 1 and the armature 11 of the auxiliary machine are connected in series across an adjustable resistance 5 in the main circuit, or a fixed resistance may be used such as a field winding or brake-magnet coil, and a separate potentiometer may be connected as a shunt to this resistance. This arrangement produces a drooping speed-torque characteristic. If it is desired to obtain a higher normal speed with a similar characteristic, a shunt 21 may be provided for the field winding 16 of the auxiliary machine, the resistance of the potentiometer may be increased, or an adjustable resistance may be provided in the field circuit 6. Fig. 4 shows a potentiometer 25 by means of which the speed and direction of rotation of the motor can be controlled. Fig. 6 shows a modified arrangement for maintaining full torque over a wide range of speed. The auxiliary machine is provided with an additional field winding 16<a> connected so as to oppose the main winding 16. Further modified characteristics may be obtained by providing extra field windings on the motor or auxiliary machine and connected in shunt to either of the armatures.
