Description
Window Sash
DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to a wooden sash for a sash window.
Sash windows have been made since about 1700 and have traditionally been made of wood. Although other materials are now available, for example uPVC and aluminium, wood construction is frequently required for asthetic and other reasons.
In conventional wooden sash windows, a glazing panel is retained in place by a wooden bead nailed to the rebate of the sash. The complementary portions of the bead and the rebate are flat. It has been found that this construction suffers from a disadvantage in that movement in the bead, such as shrinkage, can lead to the ingress of moisture to the glazed area. This ingress of moisture in the case where the sash is double (or triple) glazed can lead to the failure of double glazing with water trapped in the glazed area.
It has been proposed to provide drainage of the glazed area by using a metal or wooden bead having through holes. However, these bead designs are undesirable because they detract from the traditional appearance of the window.
It is an aim of the present invention to overcome the disadvantages of the prior art.
According to the present invention, there is provided a wooden sash for a sash window comprising a sash frame having a rebate to receive a glazing panel, a glazing panel received in the rebate and a bead arranged to retain the glazing panel in the rebate, wherein the joint between the bead and the rebate, as viewed in seaion transverse of the bead, includes a step.
Preferably, the step comprises joint portions substantially at right angles to each other. However, the step could be formed by a combination of curves or a combination of curves and angles. There could also be a plurality of steps in the manner of a staircase. A step in first direction may also be followed by a step in the opposite direction.
It has been found in accelerated enviromental testing that the presence of the step enables the sealing properties of the bead-to-rebate joint to be substantially retained even after prolonged weathering. Additionally, the presence of the step assists correct location of the bead with respect to the glazing panel.
Preferably, the sash frame comprises a lower frame member having a drainage dua extending therethrough from a region of the sash inboard of the bead.
This drainage arrangement is effectively hidden from external view and, therefore, does not detract from the traditional appearance of the sash.
Preferably, the drainage duct is substantially vertical. The drainage dua may be lined with a plastics material, for example by inserting a tube through a hole drilled in the sash..
Preferably, a channel is provided in the rebate inboard of the bead and into which the drainage dua opens.
Preferably, the glazing panel comprises a plurality of substantially plane parallel transparent sheets, for example double or triple glazing.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the single figure which shows a sectional view of a sash window including a sash embodying the present invention.
Referring to the single figure, a sash window comprises a rectangular wooden frame 1, a wooden outer sash 2 and a wooden inner sash 3. The sashes 2,3 are mounted in the frame for vertical sliding motion.
Considering the outer sash 2 in particular, the sash 2 comprises a rectangular sash frame 4 and a glazing panel 5 including two parallel spaced sheets of glass, received within a rebate 6 in the sash frame 4. The glazing panel 5 is retained in position by means of wooden beads 7 pinned along the walls of the rebate 6.
The walls of the rebate 6 are each provided with a channel 8 substantially aligned with the respective edge of the glazing panel 5. The outer margins of the walls of the rebate 6 are cut away so that a step 9 is formed in each wall.
The portions of the beads 7 which contact the walls of the rebate 6 are correspondingly stepped.
The through hole 10 extends through the lower side of the sash frame 4 from the channel 8 therein. A plastics tube 11 is inserted into the through hole 10 to provide a protective lining.
The non-planar form of the joints between the beads 7 and the walls of the rebate 6 means that, even after weathering, the ingress of moisture to the space between the glazing panel 5 and the walls of the rebate 6 is resisted.
However, should moisture find its way into this space or that between the glass sheets of the glazing panel 5, it will be drained by the through hole 10.
The inner sash 3 is similarly provided with stepped rebate walls and a through hole for drainage.
