Abstract

229,120. Andres, M. March 15, 1924. Engines with two or more cylinders with axes perpendicular to main shaft; radial - cylinder engines; engines wi t h two pistons reciprocating oppositely within same cylinder; driving - gear. -A double-acting twostroke engine is provided with pairs of parallel cylinders, the four oppositely-moving pistons of each pair of which are connected to a three-throw crankshaft. The cylinders may be arranged horizontally, vertically or in V formation. The upper pistons b are pivoted to a T-shaped member k which is pivoted at l and p to slippers m, o slidable in a guideway n. The guide o is connected by a second rod q to a crosshead r connected by a rod t to the central crank f. Inequalities in the pressure occurring in the cylinders a on the pistons b is transmitted to the guideway n. The lower pistons c are connected through right-angled trunnions z and forked connections and rods 3, 4 which permit transverse and lateral play to the outer cranks g on the shaft. The crosshead 5 carrying the trunnions z is provided with slippers 1 which engage guides 2. The cylinders and guide may be cast in one, or in two parts bolted together. The rods t may be prolonged to the slippers o and the rods q dispensed with.
