Two-stroke-cycle engines; driving- gear; cylinders, admission ports and' passages of.-An inverted two-cylinder Diesel engine driving through a beam i has the air pumps n arranged directly under the cylinder b remote from the crank shaft and driven by means of a rod o from the piston d in this cylinder. The pump may be single or double-acting. The size and position of the beam i is chosen so that in working the connecting rods e, f do not cross the axes of the cylinders a, b ; as a consequence the side thrust on the pistons is continuously towards the sides of the cylinders where the admission ports l, m are arranged. Two cylinders and their water jackets are cast in one, the spaces between the jackets forming a receiver q for the air from the pump. There are two sets of air admission ports to each cylinder; the lower set l are used for scavenging air and close with the exhaust ports. The upper set m are covered by the piston after the exhaust ports are closed; air to these ports is controlled by a rotary or oscillating valve s, one valve controlling the supply for the two cylinders. The super-charging air to the ports m is either supplied from a high pressure reservoir or as shown the valve s is housed in the receiver q and the air from the pump n is used. The pump &c. balances the main connecting rod k. Each set of cylinders as described above is formed with vertical flanges u, Fig. 2, by which it can be bolted to a second set thereby enabling a multi-cylinder engine of any number of cylinders to be built.
