Abstract
228,749. Griffiths, C. A. April 15, 1924. Heating systems and apparatus.-Apparatus for distilling solid carbonaceous materials for the recovery of oils, pitch, and ammonia comprises a thin rotary externally heated retort of from three to twelve inches diameter and provided with means for cleaning the internal surface and distributing the heat through the charge. The material which may be finely ground is fed from a hopper 1 to a screw conveyer 8, the shaft 9 of which is driven by a pulley 10 and is secured by a cross-piece 21 to an extension 14 of the retort 13, which is supported on rollers 22, 23 and rotates in fixed casings 4, 29. The cylinders 13, 14 are secured together by an overlapping flanged sleeve 16 and burners 28 are provided capable of regulation individually or in groups. The residue is discharged by a conveyer 37 and outlet 38 and the distillates escape through a downwardly sloping conduit 43. The internal cleaning means may consist of a loose core 47 carrying a helical wire brush 46, which serves to advance the material through the retort, or of a cylindrical mass of entangled wire lying loosely in the retort. Alternative means are chains loosely suspended from a tube 56 on the shaft 55, Fig. 5, or a screw conveyer 61, Fig. 7, lying on the bottom of the retrot or wire brushes 71 attached to a two-part sleeve 70 loosely arranged on the central rod 69, Fig. 11. Superheated steam or water or a heated gas may be injected into the retort to assist the distillation, and granular materials such as sand or metals may be introduced with the material to be treated either cool to assist the passage of the material through the retort or heated to assist the distillation.
