Abstract

A stable composition adapted to give solutions for bleaching textiles &c. containing sodium hypochlorite of predetermined strength on adding to water, comprises a dry mixture of stable calcium hypochlorite containing a certain amount of free alkali and sodium carbonate. The stable calcium hypochlorite is prepared as described in Specification 195,366, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], by passing chlorine into a water suspension of limestone or precipitated chalk, separating the resulting hypochlorous acid by means of a solvent such as carbon tetrachloride mixed with 2.0 per cent by volume of ethyl alcohol and treating the hypochlorous acid solution so obtained with excess of slaked lime, containing a small proportion of water, to form the calcium salt and evaporating to dryness the aqueous solution obtained by extracting with water. The composition may be made up in the form of pellets, tablets or capsules.ALSO:A composition, stated to be stable, adapted to give solutions containing sodium hypochlorite of predetermined strength on adding to water, comprises a dry mixture of stable calcium hypochlorite containing a certain amount of free alkali and sodium carbonate. The stable calcium hypochlorite is prepared as described in Specification 195,366 by passing chlorine into a water suspension of limestone or precipitated chalk, separating the resulting hypochlorous acid by means of a solvent such as carbon tetrachloride mixed with 2 per cent by volume of ethyl alcohol and treating the hypochlorous acid solution so obtained with excess of slaked lime containing a small proportion of water to form the calcium salt and evaporating to dryness the aqueous solution obtained by extracting with water. The composition may be made up in the form of pellets, tablets or capsules, and may be used as a disinfectant and for bleaching textiles, paper pulp &c.
