Abstract

Dry processes of extracting metals. -In the reduction of ores, the material treated is fed in powdered form at one end of a rotary retort and is carried forward in contact with hot gases from the combustion of powdered fuel, the air for primary and/or secondary combustion together, if desired, with steam being introduced separately into the interior of the retort at one or more points along its length. Air from a fan K is preheated in an annular space a and forced through passages a<2> into an enlarged compartment E into which powdered fuel is blown through an opening D and steam or air or both through passages b<2> leading from superheating passages b. The ore being treated together with powdered carbonaceous material is fed from a hopper C by a screw conveyer C' and due to rotation of the retort is showered by projections b<1> into the current of hot gases from the combustion space. The gases leave the retort through a passage G communicating with a waste-heat boiler F and main G<2> leading to condensers. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of breakers or balls in the retort.
