Abstract
A strip of metal or other suitable material is secured to a wheel by means of two spring loaded retaining pins which are inserted through two holes made in the wheel. A threaded screw protrudes from the centre of the strip to be coaxial with the wheel hub. To secure the wheel trim to the wheel a nut is inserted through a hole made in the centre of the wheel trim and engaged with the threaded screw. <IMAGE>
Description
IMPROVED WHEEL TRIN SECURING SYSTEM
This invention relates to removeable vehicle wheel trims.
Wheel trims are well known and used on many vehicles for decorative and/or streamline purposes.
One of the present systems for securing wheel trims to wheels involves the use of spring clips which are attached to the wheel trim and when the wheel trim is fitted to the wheel the clips are compressed - holding the trim on to the wheel.
The removal of a wheel trim can be carried out by pulling the trim from the wheel by hand (no tools required).
Occasionally, due to vibrations and the weakness of the spring clips the wheel trim may come away from the wheel resulting in the loss of that trim.
This can occurr when the vehicle is relatively new.
Used with the spring clips, the improved system will secure the wheel trim to the wheel more effectively.
A description of the invention is given with reference to the following drawings:
Figure 1 Shows Components.
Figure 2 Shows view of wheel with strip fitted in
position.
Figure 3 Illustrates how wheel trim is fitted to wheel.
With Reference to Figure 1
A strip of metal or suitable material is fitted over the hub of each wheel and shaped to the contour of the wheel.
With Reference to Figure 2
The strip must be fitted to the wheel in a way to allow the wheel bearing and wheel studs to go through the appropriate holes.
The strip is held in position on to each wheel by two spring loaded retaining pins which are inserted through two holes made in each wheel.
This system allows wheels and wheel trims to be easily changed around.
With Reference to Figure 3
From the centre of the strip a threaded screw (metal or non metallic) is inserted.
This thread must protrude from the centre of the wheel and must be securely fastened to the strip (eg. welded if metal).
To secure the wheel trim to the wheel a nut (metal or non metallic) is inserted through a hole made in the centre of the wheel trim.
The wheel trim is then pushed on to the wheel and the nut is screwed to the protruding thread on the wheel and the nut is screwed to the protruding thread on the wheel. The nut must be tightened to the end of the thread to 'lock' the nut in position. The length of thread is important so not to misshape the wheel trim when the nut is fully tightened.
The head of the nut may be any shape or size and may be used to display a symbol or word.
A small pipe inserted through the hole of the wheel trim and then fitted over the protruding thread on the wheel may be used to centre the wheel trim on to the wheel.

Claims (3)
1) A strip of metal (or suitable material) with a
protruding threaded screw from the centre and a 'key'
hole at each end is secured centrally over the hub of
each wheel of a vehicle by means of two spring loaded
retaining 'key' pins which are inserted through two
holes made in each wheel, a nut is then inserted
through a hole made in the centre of each wheel trim
and is then screwed fully on to the protruding thread
on the wheel to lock the nut and therefore the wheel
trim in position.
2) A small pipe inserted through the hole of the wheel
trim and then fitted over the protruding thread on
the wheel to centre the wheel trim on to the wheel
more easily.
3) Improved wheel trim securing system substantially as
described herein with reference to Figures 1-3 of the
accompanying drawings.
