Abstract

A rod rest having a body (11) with apertures at each end, through which legs (17, 18) are inserted to allow a front rest piece (15) and a back rest piece (16) to be attached to the relative protruding sections of the legs. The legs have pre-determined stops (12) to ensure correct protruding length. The body is marked (13) so that the underside is apparent during assembly. The level of the front can be lowered using alternative legs provided so the tip of the fishing rod used may also be lowered to adapt to different water levels. The body is capable of containing the component parts of the rest for storage. <IMAGE>

Description

FREESTANDING ROD REST This invention relates to a freestanding rod rest as used in coarse fishing or angling.
Rod rests are commonly used to support the fishing rod when it is not being held. They often take the form of a thin metal rod pointed at one end and "Y" shaped at the other. These are usuaily used in pairs to support the fishing rod at two points either side of the reel and are forced into the ground for stability.
A recent alternative to the aforementioned rod rest is the tripod rest where the pointed end of the rod rest has been replaced by three legs but again has to be used in palrs. These were designed for use on hard banks ideas where a conventional rod rest would not be able to penetrate the ground.
Another alternative is a multi-rod rest which has four legs on each corner of a rectangular shaped frame capable of holding up to three fishing rods. This type is used mainly when fishing for large fish eg:carp, and tends to be expensive, bulky and the complementary parts are purchased seperately.
According to the present invention, there is provided a free standing rod rest comprising of four legs,a front rest piece, a back rest piece and a main body or spine having four apertures at each end to enable the legs to be pushed through the body. The two rest pieces can then be attached to the protruding parts of the legs. Also provided are two additional front legs so that the existing ones may be substituted to lower the front end. This allows the tip of the fishing rod to be angled downwards if water levels are too low. The body, when the rest is not in use, acts as a slim storage case where the other components are put inside until needed. It can be used on both hard and soft banks and will support the fishing rod at two points to keep it off the ground.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows, in perspective, the main body.
Figure 2 shows both ends of the main body.
Figure 3 shows the front rest piece.
Figure 4 shows the front rest piece (alternative view).
Figure 5 shows the back rest piece.
Figure 6 shows one of each leg.
Figure 7 shows the assembled front end.
Figure 8 shows the assembled back end.
Figure 9 shows the assembled rest viewed from side( level).
Figure 10 shows the rest completely assembled in perspective.
Figure 11 shows the assembled rest viewed from side(front low) Figure 12 shows the assembled rest used level when the water level is high.
Figure 13 shows the assembled rest used with the front low when water level is low.
Refering to the drawings, the rod rest comprises of a main body(11),a set of legs(17,18,19),a front rest piece(15) and a back rest piece(16).
The main body takes the form of a tube which is closable. It has four apertures(14) at each end,as shown in fig 1 and 2, placed evenly around the outside with one pair of opposing holes offset from the other to enable the legs to be pushed through the body without touching each other.ln this example the top of the body is marked(13) so that the underside is apparent during assembly.
The legs come in pairs with a stops(12) secured at a specific point down from the top to prevent them from being pushed too far through the body.
The back legs(17) are pushed fully through the holes at one end from the underside ensuring that the body is the right way up.The back rest piece shown in fig 5 has a means of attachment to enable connect ion to the protruding sections of the back legs .The tip of each leg is attached to each end of the back rest to form the back rod rest support as shown in fig 8.
The rod rest is provided with two sets of front legs, the choice of which depends on wether the fishing rod is to be kept level for high water levels (using 18) as shown in fig 12 or wether it Is to be angled down for low water levels(using 19) as shown in fig 13.When the choice has been made the legs are pushed fully through the apertures at the other end from the underside of the main body. The front rest has means of attachment to enable connection to the protruding sections of the front legs. The front rest is attached to the front legs to form the front rod rest support as shown in fig 7.
The remaining set of front legs can then be put into the body for storage.
The fully assembled rest,as shown In figs 9,10 and 11, can then be used.
The dimensions of the component parts of the rod rest are such that they can all be put into the body for storage when not in use.
