Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO SECURITY DEVICES
This invention relates to a security device for use on sliding doors or windows, and in particular for use on patio doors.
Patio doors are presently very popular in residential housing. It has, however, been found that many break-ins occur via such doors.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate this problem.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a security device for securing a sliding door or window comprising a bar adapted to be pivotally moutable at one end on an inner edge of the door or window, so as to be moveable between an inoperative position generally parallel te said inner edge, and an operative position at an angle to said inner edge, the other end of the bar being engageable ith latch means to prevent sliding movement of the door or wir.do-s.
in the operative position of the bar.
Preferably, in the operative position the bar 5 generally normal to said inner edge.
The door may be in the form of a pair of doors, such as a patio door, comprising a first outer door and a second inner door at least one of the doors being slidable withy a door frame, wherein in a closed position first vertical ages of each door abut respective vertical sides of the docr frame, and second vertical edges of each door are located substantially at the same distance between the vert:za s-es of the door frame.
In this case, the bar may be mounted on the first door or an inner surface of the second vertical edge thereof, latch being attached to the second bar on the first vertical edge thereof.
The bar may, in such instance, be moveable between the operative position, wherein the bar is substantially parallel to the second edge of the first door, and an operative position, wherein the second end of the bar is received by the latch.
Alternatively, in this case, the bar may be mounted on the second door on an inner surface of the first vertical edge thereof, the latch being attached to the first door on-the second vertical edge thereof.
The bar may, in such instance, be moveable between the inoperative position, wherein the bar is substantially parallel to the first edge of the first door, and the operative position, wherein the second end of the ba is received by the latch.
It should be appreciated that in either of the above instances either the inner door, or the outer door, or both doors may be slidable.
It is preferable that the bar is mounted, and the latch attached at substantially equal heights on respective vertical edges.
Preferably also, the bar is mounted by means of a ball joint.
The bar may be provided with means by which the length of the bar can be varied.
Further, the latch ray be in the form of a res= on w h ich the other end of the bar can be placed.
Alternatively, the latch may be in the for of 2 spring catch.
Also, the latch may be provided with locking means by which the other end of the bar can be secured within the latch.
The device may be built integrally with the door or window such that any or all of the bar and latch are substantially flush with the edges of the door or window when not in use.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a sliding door or window having a bar adapted to be pivotally mountable at one end on a first inner edge of the door or window, so as to be moveable between an inoperative position generally parallel to said inner edge, and an operative position at an angle to said inner edge, the other end of the bar being engageable with latch means to prevent sliding movement of the door or window in the operative position of the bar.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of securing a sliding door or window comprising pivotally mounting one end of a bar to a first inner edge of the door or window, so as to be moveable between an inoperative position generally parallel to said inner edge, and an operative position at an angle to said inner edge, the other end of the bar being engageable with latch means to prevent sliding movement of the door or window in the operative position of the bar.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings which are:
Fig 1 a front vie from inside of a patio ocr fitter with a security device accord ins t= the present
invention;
Fig 2 a partial view to an enlarged scale of a
pivotally mounted bar for use in the security
device of Fig 1;
Fig 3 a partial view to an enlarged scale of a bar
for use in the security device of Fig 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is provided a security device 5 for securing a sliding door 10. In the embodiment disclosed herein, the sliding door 10 is a patio door comprising a first slideable outer door 15 and a second fixed inner door 20. In a closed position (as shown in Fig 1) first vertical edges 25, 26 of each door 15, 20 abut respective vertical sides 27, 28 of a door frame 30, second vertical edges 35, 36 of each door 15, 20 being located substantially at the same distance between the vertical sides 25, 26 of the door frame 30.
The device 5 comprises a bar 40 having first and second ends 45, 46 and a latch 50. The bar 40 is adapted to be pivotally mountable at the first end 45 on an inner surface 55 of the first vertical edge 25, by means of a ball joint 60 attached to the inner surface 55.
The bar 40 comprises first and second substantially concentric tubes 65, 70. A first end of the tube 65 comprises the first end 45 of the bar 40, while a second end of the tube 70 comprises the second end 46 of the bar 40. The first tube 65 is of slightly smaller diameter than the second tube 70, so that a second end 75 (not shown) of the first tube 65 is insertable within a first end 80 of the second tube 70.
Further, a plurality of corresponding holes 85, 90 are provided on each of the tubes 65, 70 such that when the second end 75 of the first tube 65 is inserted within the first end 80 of the second tube 70, the bar 40 can b =-jusW a the required length for the first door 15. The holes 5, 9C can then be aligned, and a pin 95 inserted through an c are aligned holes 85, 90. The pin 95 has a hole 100 rz the base thereof for reception of a spring clip 105 to retain the pin 95 within the aligned holes 85, 90. In this way the bar 40 can be adjusted in length dependent upon the spacing between the ball joint 60 and the latch 50.
The latch 50 is attached to the second door 15 on the first vertical edge 25 thereof, the latch 45 being positioned at substantially equal height to the ball joint 60.
In this embodiment the latch 50 comprises a substantially u-shaped member suitable for receiving and retaining the second end 46 of the bar 40.
In an inoperative position the bar 45 hangs generally parallel to the first vertical edge 25, while, in an operative position, the second end 46 of the bar 40 is located within the latch 50. In the operative position, therefore, the bar 40 is generally normal to the first vertical edge 25. It can, therefore, be seen that, when the bar 40 is in the operative position a burglar would find it very difficult, if not impossible, to force the door 10 open due to the restraining force exerted by the bar 40.
In this embodiment the ball joint 60 and latch 50 are provided below the level of the top of the doors 15, 20. It should, however, be appreciated that the first end 45 of the bar 40, and the latch 50, may be positioned, for example, at the top of the doors 15, 20 or the bottom of the doors 15, 20.
In this way, the bar 40 would be, at least partially, hidden from view when in the operative position.
It should also be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention hereinbefore disclosed is given by way of example only, and is not meant to limit the scope of the invention in any way. Particularly, it could be envisaged that the tar cO mould be mounted by a hinge rather than the bal joit 0 and hat the latch could then incorporate a spring -echa..-s-.
Finally it should be understood that although the specific embodiment discloses the device 5 for use on a patio door, the device could be used on any horizontally or vertically sliding doors or windows.
