Abstract

225,598. Burnett, A. S., Collins, T., and Shaw & Co., Ltd., F. Aug. 9, 1923. Milling-machines.-In a plano-milling machine of the kind in which a tracer moves over a templet, the movements of the tool and work are effected through clutch mechanism controlled by power-driven means, electrically-controlled means transmitting the power to the clutch. A double clutch 16, Figs. 4 and 5, is operated by a T- shaped lever 17, which is rocked by means of two pairs of toggles 26, 27. which are reciprocated rapidly by means of a power-driven cam shaft 22 and a spring 23. The toggles are normally kept extended by springs 29, and each toggle reciprocates in guides 25. The effect of breaking one of the toggles is to strike up one of the arms of the lever 17, and so thrust the clutch to one side or the other. The free ends of the toggles are for this purpose stopped by a hit-and-miss device, consisting of pawls or stops 30, 31 drawn into position by solenoids 32, 33. Neutralizing stops 43 are provided to break both toggles partially at the same time to bring the clutch 16 to midposition. The templet is carried on a reciprocating table while the milling-cutter and tracer are mounted on a vertical slide. The tracer 35, Fig. 3, acts through compound levers 37 upon a switch arm 34. In the extreme positions of the switch, the solenoids 32, 33 are energized respectively. In the middle position, a solenoid 42 is energized to bring the neutralizing stops 43 into action.
