Abstract

Description
ASHTRAY
This invention relates to an ashtray.
Conventional ashtrays tend to exhibit their unattractive contents and to cause offence by their unpleasant odour.
It is an object of the present invention to minimise the ugliness and unpleasantness of the conventional ashtray.
According to the invention an ashtray includes a first compartment for receiving ash and butt ends of a cigarette, cigar or pipe and a second compartment adapted to contain an quenching medium for the butt end or burning tobacco.
In a preferred form of the invention the second compartment has a lid and this may either be temporarily removable for insertion of the burning butt or have a suitable orifice through which the butt may be passed for the quenching operation.
The quenching medium may be water or sand or the like and is replaceable with fresh medium and may include a fragrance to neutralise the offensive odour of the tobacco.
In one form of the invention the ashtray comprises a receptacle for ash, the receptacle having a cover with a gap for introduction of the ash, the cover including a well for the quenching medium and the well having a removable lid with an orifice through which the butt may be passed for the quenching operation.
EMBODIMENT OF TIlE INVENTION
The invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an exploded isometric view of an ashtray according to the invention; and
Figure 2 is an isometric view of an alternative form of ashtray.
In Figure 1 the ashtray includes a first receptacle 10 of more or less conventional configuration and a cover 12 which allows ash to be deposited in the first receptacle through gaps 14.
The cover 12 includes a well 16 which can accommodate water or sand or other quenching medium and a lid 18 is provided for the well, the lid having slits 20 through which the butt of a cigarette or cigar may be passed for quenching or the hot ashes of a pipe may be deposited for quenching.
In Figure 2, an alternative form of ashtray is provided which includes a receptacle 10 for receiving ash and a compartment 22 for the quenching medium which has a lid 24 with slits 26.
Claims (5)
1.
An ashtray includes a first compartment for receiving ash and butt ends of a cigarette, cigar or pipe and a second compartment adapted to contain an quenching medium for the butt end or burning tobacco.

The ashtray according to claim 1 in which the second compartment has a lid having an orifice through which the burning end of a butt may be inserted for quenching in the medium.

The ashtray according to claim 1 in which the quenching medium is chosen from an aqueous medium, and sand.

An ashtray comprising a receptacle for ash, the receptacle having a cover with a gap for introduction of the ash, the cover including a well for the quenching medium and the well having a removable lid with an orifice through which the but may be passed for the quenching operation.

An ashtray substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
