Abstract
A valve 8 in a vehicle fuel pipe 6 enables the vehicle to be immobilised by blocking the supply of fuel from the tank 2 through the pipe 6 to the engine 4. The mechanism 14 which controls the valve 8 can only be operated using a key 12, with the mechanism being a conventional mechanical device or an electronic device. The valve is preferably situated in the boot of the vehicle. <IMAGE>
Description
TITLE
Preventing Vehicle Theft
DESCRIPTION
Technical Field
The invention relates to preventing unauthorised use or theft of vehicles by restricting the fuel supply to the engine.
Background Art
Vehicle theft alarms most commonly consist of a device which warns, usually audibly, that the vehicle has been entered by an unauthorised person. The devices are generally electronic and, once an unauthorised person or thief is inside the vehicle, there is the possibility that the device can be disarmed because the thief may then have access to the electrical system of the vehicle, including the ignition which may be bypassed even if isolated by actuation of the alarm. Electronic devices do not prevent the thief from driving the vehicle away, but only act as a deterrent. There is little deterrent value if the thief knows that a device can be disarmed. A thief will only genuinely be deterred if the vehicle is immobilised in a manner which the thief cannot easily overcome.
The Invention
The invention provides a vehicle in which fuel is supplied from a tank through a pipe to the engine, and in the pipe is a valve having means for preventing unauthorised actuation of the valve.
The means for preventing unauthorised actuation of the valve is preferably a key operated mechanism exclusively for an authorised user of the vehicle to close the valve and shut off the fuel supply from the tank to the engine so as to prevent use of the vehicle.
The key operated mechanism may be a conventional mechanical device, or maybe an electronic device, perhaps operated by a card carrying a magnetic or other code.
The valve is preferably situated in the luggage compartment or boot of the vehicle. This has a deterrent effect because, even if a potential thief can gain access to the luggage compartment, which can be alarmed, and find the key operated mechanism of the valve, the thief must then additionally gain access to the passenger compartment of the car before completing the theft, as the luggage compartment access is usually separate from the passenger compartment access.
The Drawings
Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of the components of a vehicle according to the invention.
Best Mode
With reference to the Figure, a vehicle engine 4 is supplied with fuel from a fuel tank 2 through a pipe 6. A valve 8 situated in the pipe 6 controls the supply of fuel by means of a valve member lo. The position of the member 10 is determined by a mechanism 14, which can only be operated using a key 12.
During normal operation of the engine 4, the valve member 10 will be in a position which allows fuel to flow through the pipe 6 from the tank 2 to the engine 4. On leaving the vehicle, the driver will wish to take precautions to ensure that the vehicle is not stolen. The driver can immobilise the vehicle using the key 12 to change the position of the valve member 10 and block the flow of fuel to the engine 4.
The vehicle will remain immobilised until the valve 8 is reopened using the key 12 which the driver retains. The only other way that the vehicle could be mobilised is if it was possible in some way to overcome the locking mechanism 14, but the thief would be deterred by the fact that entry to the vehicle would first have to be gained. as fuel pipes are internal, and the position of the valve 8 would have to be identified.
Claims (6)
1. A vehicle in which fuel is supplied from a tank through a pipe to the engine, and in the pipe is a valve having means for preventing unauthorized actuation of the valve.
2. A vehicle according to claim 1 wherein the means for preventing unauthorized actuation of the valve is accessible in the luggage compartment of the vehicle.
3. A vehicle according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the means for preventing unauthorized actuation of the valve is a key operated mechanism.
4. A vehicle according to claim 3 wherein the mechanism has a mechanical key operation.
5. A vehicle according to claim 3 wherein the mechanism has an electronic key operation.
6. A vehicle substantially as herein described with reference to the sole figure of the drawings.
