Abstract
In order to restrain two parts 35, 37 relative to one another the security device comprises a bolt member 1 carrying at least one key operated lock mechanism 3 whose actuable part 21 is engageable in a complementary part in a reception point 9 securely fixed to one 37 of the parts to be restrained. Where one lock mechanism 3 is provided its non-circular body engages non-rotatably with the reception part 9 to hold the bolt member 1 fixedly in a position which restrains the two parts 35, 37. As shown, bolt member is bar-like but it may be L-shaped (for roller shutter door). Actuable part 21 has screw thread for engagement with threaded bore 23 in part 9, although part 21 may be bayonet type or resilient latch withdrawn by key operation. The parts 35, 37 may be a fixed part 35 and a movable part 37 such as a hinged door on a car, van; taxi, caravan. Device may be used with a window or two opening doors, or roller shutter door. Where two lock mechanisms 3, 41 are provided there is no need for lock body 5 and reception part to be non-circular. A spigot may be provided instead of second lock mechanism. <IMAGE>
Description
Title: Security Device
DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to a security device and in particular to mechanical means for physically securing movable parts such as doors or windows, and with particular application to securing such as doors on cars, vans, taxis, caravans, etc. but without limitation to such.
The locks provided for the doors of such as vehicles comprises a cylinder lock of key operated type, e.g. tumbler action, which operates a latch of the door lock or a blocking mechanism thereof. Axial insertion of the correct key and rotation through say 90 degrees is sufficient to unlock the mechanism. Experience has shown that such locks can be easily overcome.
Accordingly, the present invention is directed to providing a device which affords improved security.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a security device for desired restraint of two parts relative to one another, the device comprising at least one reception part which is fixedly secured in relation to one of the parts to be restrained, and a bolt member carrying at least one key operated lock mechanism which has an actuable part which is engageable in a complimentary part of said reception part to retain the bolt member fixedly in a position then restraining the two parts, and wherein the bolt member with lock mechanism is releasable from the reception part on disengagement of the actuable part from its complimentary part.
A particularly simple and effective security device results when the actuable part has an helical screw thread or similar so that actuation of the key serves to physically connect the bolt member to the reception part and to draw the parts together. The lock body is preferably held non-rotatably relative to the bolt member, conveniently by the lock body being noncircular and received in a complimentary base in the bolt member. The lock mechanism may be releasable from the bolt member. It is preferred that the reception part and the bolt member or lock mechanism thereof be provided with means for locking the bolt member nonrotatably relative to the reception part. This may be done by suitable interengaging male and female parts.A particularly convenient arrangement arises when the body of the lock mechanism projects from a rear face of the bolt member and is non-circular, and where the reception part is of complimentary or corresponding non-circular shape to receive the lock body. The bottom of the reception part can then have the screw threaded hole for the actuable part.
It is preferred that the actuable part be of multi-turn type although a bayonet type fixing or latching type fixing of snap-in type having a resilient latch withdrawn by key operation is possible.
It is preferred that the key operated lock be of tumbler action type.
The bolt member may comprise a simple bar like member or other discrete shape, (for example L-shaped for a roller shutter door), apertured to receive the lock mechanism, with either raised or sunken fixing. In another embodiment, the bolt member has a spigot member or members projecting from the rear face to coincide with complimentary receiving hole or holes in one or both of the parts to be restrained. Such a design can do away with the need for the lock body to be received non-rotatably in the reception part. Another alternative has two lock mechanisms to engage with complimentary reception parts associated with each of the parts to be restrained.With such an arrangement the bolt member may engage rotatably with one lock mechanism when engaged with the reception part so as to facilitate swinging of the bolt member into a position for the other lock mechanism to engage in the other reception part.
The bolt member of the invention has the advantage that it can be constructed in an extremely robust manner, and the fixing is direct to a reception part secured to one of the parts to be fixed. The reception part is ideally within the structure of the part to which it is secured (preferably by welding or concealed nut fixing) so that it is virtually impossible to tamper with. The bolt member is held fixedly.
The present invention will now be described further by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings; in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bolt member of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side view of the bolt member and reception part with the parts separated;
Figure 3 is an end view showing more detail of the reception part; and
Figure 4 is the rear view of one embodiment of both members.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a security device, comprising an appropriately sized steel block 1, which as illustrated is generally elongated with rounded ends, but may have square ends, and which may be painted or protected by a plastic covering.
Intentions are to have the block sufficiently thick to resist bending when under attack, say of the order of 5mm for typical applications. Other materials of sufficient strength may be employed as alternatives.
The bolt member carries fixedly secured thereto a key operated lock mechanism 3, of tumbler action type, whose lock barrel 5 projects from the rear face of the bolt member. Also shown is a separate protecting gasket 7 of rubber or such like which is especially useful in preventing damage to paint work of parts being secured, such as vehicle doors.
Also illustrated is a reception part 9 intended for fixing securely to one of the two parts which the security device is intended to restrain together, usually a fixed one of the parts where one is moveable and the other fixed as intended for the embodiment illustrated in Figure 1. The part 9 is flanged as at 11 and threaded to receive a back nut 13 for fixing in a hole in a panel as at 15 - shown only in dotted outline for illustration purposes. More preferably still the reception part 9 is welded in place so only the front face 17 and opening 19 is visible to the exterior of the panel 15, so presenting a neat appearance when the security device is not fitted.As will be seen from
Figure 3 in the illustrated embodiment, the opening in the reception part is non-circular and is intended to be complimentary to the shape of the lock body 5 which is received therein on positioning of the bolt member.
That serves to locate the bolt member non-rotatably.
The lock mechanism 3 includes an actuating member 21 which is turned by the key when the correct key is fitted into the mechanism. The illustrated actuating member 21 carries a screw thread for cooperating engagement with a corresponding threaded bore 23 in the reception part for restraint purposes to hold the parts firmly together.
The key uses a tumbler action selection system so that an incorrect key cannot be used to unscrew the connections between the bolt member and reception part once the correct key has been removed. It will be understood that where the bolt member is thus fitted to a fixed part 35 and extends over a movable part 37 such as a hinged door shown diagrammatically in Figure 1 for illustrative purposes, the door is prevented from being opened outwardly.
There may be occasions where added security is required or where two opening doors are required to be secured together or at least restrained, and I propose to incorporate further restraining means either in the form of a spigot projecting from the rear face of the bolt member, as indicated at 39, for reception in a hole in one or other of the parts. More preferably, however, a further lock mechanism is provided as shown by dotted outline 41 in Figure 1 (constructed preferably identically to the first lock mechanism) and a further reception part is provided with each reception part mounted fixedly in a respective one of the parts to be restrained. Such an arrangement enables the bolt member to be securely fixed to both parts. In such an embodiment, there is no need for the lock body and reception bore to be non-circular, as the two connection provisions provide adequate retention.
In a preferred embodiment in which the bolt member has two locking mechanisms, the body of one is received releasably (but preferably non-rotatably) in a bore in the bolt member, and the bolt member is received rotatable about the other lock mechanism body. This enables the bolt member to be secured to one of the parts whilst still being rotatable to facilitate alignment of the bore with the reception part and fitting of said one locking mechanism thereto.
