Description

JOINTING SYSTEM AND FASTENERS.
This Invention relates to a jointing system and fasteners for use in such a system.
Many forms of construction based on the assembly of sub-units have been proposed, for example for the speedy construction of bui)dlngs and other structures. In tnese, one major problem is the difficulty of making the assembly of the sub-units simp) e and re) jab) e, and there is a need for a jointing system and fasteners which can be used for the construction of as wide a variety of structures as possible with the minimum of different forms of fasteners and a)so, if possible, without having to cut or drill the units to an extent which either weakens them or adds unduly to the expense of their production.
I have now found a jointing system and form of fastener which can be used very extensive)y and which do not require the structural sub-units to be dri)]ed or specia))y shaped.
According to the present invention there is provided an improved jointing system for assemb) ing a structure from sub-units, which comprises binding together two sub-units of the structure by means of a post and a fastener which is adapted to be secured to a post (A) and also to engage and grip elements of each of two separate sub-units (B and C respective)y) and force all three of these (A B and C) together into mutua) engagement sufficient to hod them together as part of an assembled structure.
According to the invention there is also provided an improved fastener which is adapted to be secured to a post (A) and a)so to engage and grip elements of each of two subunits (B and C respective)y) and force all three of these (A, B and C) together into mutua) engagement sufficient to hold them together as part of an assembled structure.
The manner in which the fastener is adapted to be secured to a post is preferably by means of a channel through the post, so that the fastener passes through the channel and is retained therein, and the fastener is provided with means which can engage and grip accessible parts of the sub-units and, by tightening adjustment, draw the sub-units towards the post and each other.
This method has the advantage that only the post needs to have a channel in it to take the fastener, and the subunits can be made so) id and without any need for a channel in them. This means that a post can be used as a basicassembly point for a structure and be the only component which requires a channel to be formed in it. This is a great advantage, not only since the sub-units can have enhanced strength because of the absence of channe) ) ing, but a) so through the facility for the same basic post to be used for joining together a wide variety of sub-units.
It is preferred that the post should have a rounded cross-section (i.e. should have curved rather than angular surfaces) but this is not absolutely essential provided it does have surfaces which facilitate the required close fit to the fastener and to the sub-units. Likewise, it is preferred that the sub-units should have those sections which are to take part in the fastening a) so of rounded cross-section. Very conveniently, the rounded cross-section is a substantia))y circular cross-section, as this is both easy to form and a) so well suited to allowing a degree of rotational movement of the engaging sections, as is usefu) in the stages of adjustment prior to finaZislng and tightening the fastening.
Preferably the round portions of the sub-units are each shaped with a groove or recess in the region where the fastener grips them. This groove allows the fastener to get a good grip on the sub-unit without awing appreciab)e sSippage along the length of the round portion, so assisting in accurate location of the fastener exactly where it is required. It a)so provides a recess in which the shank of the fastener can )ie without fouling the round portions of the sub-units, so that the two sub-units can be easily rotated about their axes within the rounded end portions of the fastener before the fastener is fina))y secured in its tightest position to grip the sub-units and post and render them substantia))y immovable relative to each other.
The material from which the components (the post and the sub-units) are made may vary as desired, and may be for eaxmpSe wood, meta), plastic or a combination of these.
Wood is the most preferred, as it is so convenient.
The channel in the post may be a ho) e, made of sufficient size to accommodate the fastener, and may formed in any convenient manner, for example by dri))ing. The channel can be situated so that it passes through the thicker part of the post, for examp3e substantia))y across the diameter of a round post, so minimising any )oss of strength of the post. The post may have more than one channel in it, and various channels may be spaced apart so as to allow any desired position or direction of fixing.
The preferred form for the fastener comprises a shank, of a shape and size suited to fit in the channel in the post, with a head or attachment at one end which is large than the channel so that it can engage the post and not be pulled thorugh the channel as the fastener is tightened.
The other end of the fastener is adapted to carry a member which is shaped to engage and retain the two sub-units, with means for adjustment of the said member so that it can move between a position (a) in which the relevant parts of the sub-units can be moved into place within the fastening and a second position (b) in which the post and the two sub-units are gripped and prevented from coming apart.
The member at the end of the fastener is preferably a strip or bar which in its central region engages the shank and at its opposing ends is turned back, in the direction of the head of the shank. The engagement with the shank and its adjustment is preferably by screw-threaded nut fitting on a screw thread at the end of the shank. The shank, the strip or bar, and the nut may be made of any materia] of appropriate strength for example meta). The materia) may be selected for properties such as corrosion resistance, f)exibi)ity, strength, etc., and may be coated (e.g.
painted) if desired.
The sub-units may be pane) S, bars, frames or the alike of any desired shape, size or comp)exity. They may be the same or different.
An examp) e of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a crosssection of a fastener of my invention used to fasten together a po)e and two sub-units, and Figure 2 represents a cross-section of the fastener of Figure 1 used to connect a po)e and two sub-units.
The fastener comprises a shank 1 with an enlarged head 2 at one end and at the other end a portion with a screw thread 3, on which a nut 4 is carried. A strip 5 is also fitted on the end of the shank adjacent to the nut, and has opposite ends 6 and 7 which are curved backwards towards the head.
In use, the shank is passed through a ho)e in a round post 8 so that the head retains it in place, and the round portions 9 and 10 of two items to be joined together are enclosed within the curved back ends. The fastener is then tightened, using the nut on the screw thread of the shank, until the three round sections 8, 9 and 10 are gripped together.
As shown in Figure 2, the round portions of the subunits (9 and 10) are each shaped with a groove or recess in the round portions of the sub-units in the region where the fastener grips them. This groove avows the fastener to get a good grip on the sub-unit without a))owing appreciable sAippage among the length of the round portion, so assisting in accurate location of the fastener exactly where it is required. It also provides a recess in which the shank of the fastener can lie without fouling the round portions of the sub-units, so that the two sub-units can be easily rotated about their axes within the rounded end portions of the fastener before the fastener is finally secured in its tightest position to grip the sub-units and post and render them substantially immovable relative to each other.
The round portions 9 and 10 are part of sub-units, which may be panels, bars, frames or the like of any desired shape, size or complexity (not shown).
The arrangement using a) 1 three section of round form a) lows the angle between the sub-units of which 9 and 10 are part to be altered without disturbing the position of the three members 8, 9 and 10 relative to each other. This allows maximum scope for adjustment with minimum disturbance of any section other than the one being adjusted.
In its slmplest form, the invention can be used for fastening together three sub-units (for example panels) to make a triangular structure (as represented in Figures 3 and 4). The invention may also be used to assemble structures of other shapes and sizes, including shapes of various polygonal, zig-zag, or even linear forms, as indicated diagrammatica))y in Figure 5. These are useful for making products such as fences, containers, enclosures and various items for garden use, but are not restricted to these. Even complex structures such as sununerhouses, furniture, plant containers, arches, pergolas and the ike may be made using it.
In Figures 3, 4 and 5, the fasteners and jointing according to the invention (see Figures 1 and 2) are indicated by X.
