Abstract

220,299. Carrier Engineering Corporation, (Assignees of Carrier, IV. H.). Aug. 7, 1923, [Convention date]. Aspirating - apparatus, ejector; mixed fluids cooled in diffusers.-In a closed refrigerating system preferably employing dichlorethylene as the refrigerant and comprising an evaporator, a centrifugal exhauster, and a condenser, working under a partial vacuum, an ejector for withdrawing from the condenser any uncondensed vapour together with air that has leaked into the system, comprises a baffled chamber 47, Figs. 4, 11 and 13, containing a quantity of liquefied refrigerant. The air and vapour are drawn from the condenser through a pipe 41 connecting with a pipe or coil 49 in the evaporator leading to the induced-fluid inlet of an ejector 45 that is supplied with inducing-liquid through a pipe 48 by a centrifugal pump 46 drawing from the refrigerant in the central compartment 53a of the chamber 47. The ejector discharges through a perforated pipe 58 into a compartment 53, from which air is free to escape by a pipe 50, while the mixed condensate and inducing-liquid overflow a baffle 51 into the pump compartment. The liquid in the pump compartment is free to overflow a baffle 52 into a compartment 53b from which surplus liquid is returned to the evaporator through a float-controlled valve 55. The chamber 47 is at atmospheric pressure and is initially charged with a supply of refrigerant, the condensate drawn through the ejector being sufficient to provide a liquid seal through a pipe 59 for the pump 23 and to make up losses due to leahage past the valve 55.
