Abstract
An aircraft landing wheel, with vanes 11 attached so that the wheel rotates in the air stream as it is lowered, to minimize tyre wear when contact with the surface is made. <IMAGE>
Description
AIRCRAFT LANDING WHEEL WITH VANES
This invention relates to vanes for aircraft landing wheels.
Aircraft landing wheels are the part of the undercarriage of an aircraft that contacts the surface or runway, when an aircraft takes off and lands.
The tyre that forms part of the wheel is subject to rapid wear on landing because the wheel is stationary when the initial contact with the surface is made.
According to the present invention, there is provided two or more vanes attached to the wheel so that the wheel will revolve as it 15 lowered it the air stream.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the acoompanying drawing in wMch Figure 1 shows a wheel with three vanes in position.
Figure 2 shows the front elevation of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing the vaned wheel comprises a wheel 10 with vanes 11 attached. Revolving around axle 12 supported by structure 13.
Arrow 14 is the direction of motion with arrow 15 representing the oncoming air.
when the landing wheels are lowered, the direction of notion is that of arrow 14, the oncoming air shown by arrow 15 strikes the vanes 11 and the wheel rotates in the required direction so th?t the periphery speed of the wheel near matches that of the surf ace or runway.
Claims (2)
1 Aircraft landing wheel with vanes, comprising a wheel with two or more vanes on one side of the wheel.
2 Aircraft landing wheel with vanes as claimed in Claim 1 but on each side of the wheel.
