Abstract

218,750. Saunders, A. G. April, 13, 1923. Asphalts.-An artificial asphalt consists of finely-divided calcium carbonate a bituminous or tar base, and either resin, or thin mineral oil, or both. The resin is used in proportions of the order of 10 per cent of the binder. The preferred binder consists of bitumen, resin, and Stockholm tar, with or without crude mineral oil. The Specification contains several examples of compositions, of which the following is typical: 117.6 lb. resin, 39.2 lb. Stockholm tar, 78.4 lb. bitumen and 9.8 lb. crude oil are melted together with the addition of 35 lb. kerosene and incorporated with a mixture of 2223 lb. calcium carbonate and 17 lb. oxide of iron for colouring purposes.
