Abstract

218,639. Allyne-Zerk Co., (Assignees of Zerk, O. U.). July 5, 1923, [Convention date]. Single-acting suctionvalveless piston pumps; suction reservoirs. - A gun for supplying lubricant to a nipple 26 comprises a low - pressure chamber 10 with a piston 20 therein adapted to ensure feed of lubricant therefrom to a highpressure cylinder 23, and a high-pressure. plunger 30 adapted to expel the contents of the cylinder 23 by force exerted between the gun and the nipple, such force also effecting and maintaining a fluid - tight joint between the nozzle of the gun and the nipple. The cylinder 23 is provided with a non-return valve 27 and telescopes in the mouth 12 of the chamber 10, communicating therewith through a port 28. The plunger 30 abuts against a cross-pin 29 and extends into the cylinder 23. A spring 32 is arranged between the head 31 of the plunger and a shoulder 24 on the cylinder. The upper part 11 of the container is pressed on to the lower part 10 and contains the cork piston 20, with washers 21, secured on a piston rod 17 extending through a cap 14 and secured to a handle 18. The cap 14 is secured on the part 11 by a wire 16 sprung over a bead 13. The port 28 may be replaced by longitudinal flutes 33, Fig. 4, on the plunger 30. To facilitate the withdrawal of the piston 20 for filling the container, the formation of a vacuum in the container is prevented by a non- return valve 37, Fig. 2, in a passage 34 in the end of the rod 17. Alternatively, the rod 17 may move axially in the piston 20 to open passages 45, 47, Fig. 6. The cylinder 23 is provided with a nozzle 25 having a semi-spherical recess adapted to have leak-proof contact with the nipple 26 at various angles. In operation, the nozzle 25 is pressed against the nipple 26 by pressure on the handle 18. The piston 20 moves inwards to charge the cylinder through the port 28, and, as the pressure is increased, the container slides over the cylinder and the plunger 30 ejects the charge of lubricant under high pressure. Alternatively, the device may be operated by pressing the container towards the nipple, without using the handle. When the pressure is released, the spring 32 moves the cylinder outwards, the vacuum produced therein causing a fresh charge to be drawn into the cylinder and causing the piston 20 to move downwards in the container.
