1464773 Reciprocating pumps J M MAGRATH 21 March 1974 [23 March 1973] 12633/74 Heading F1A [Also in Division AS] A liquid metering dispenser comprises a body 10 having a cylinder 24, Fig. 4, open at one end only, a piston 26 slidable in the cylinder between minimum and maximum cylinder volume positions, a liquid supply bottle 14 attachable to the body, the attachment including an inlet for delivering liquid to the cylinder adjacent the closed end thereof, a discharge passage 25 for discharging liquid from the cylinder, a first handle 11 held in an operators hand, a second handle 12 connected to the piston, which may be squeezed by hand towards the first handle to move the piston, the second handle being biased to a position away from the body by a compression spring 17 whereby the piston is urged to its maximum volume position, and check-valves 48, 19 respectively for preventing reverse passage of liquid through the said inlet and through the discharge passage, the liquid supply attachment including a detachable fitting 15 mounted on the body for retaining bottle 14 thereon in an inverted position, a bottle seal piercing tube 46 on the body, the tube which terminates in a sharp point providing a passage between the bottle interior and the cylinder, and a boss 16 surrounding the inlet of a nipple 44 detachably engaged by the base 45 of the piercing tube 46 which tube is received in a passage in a cylindrical block 43 adjustably attaching the fitting 15 to the boss 16, fitting 15 having an internal shoulder 50 around the passage to press tube 46 into position on the nipple and to seal an upper portion of the passage from the portion communicating with the piercing tube base. An upper seat of fitting 15 receives the bottle neck and comprises cam followers or plungers 53, 54 mounted in the fitting and slidable towards a collar 23, rotatably mounted on the fitting, by springs (58), (59), Fig. 5 (not shown), the collar having cam surfaces (74)-(77) for moving the plungers to engage the bottle neck. When liquid is withdrawn from the bottle, air is admitted to the bottle via a passage 81 with a check-valve and a tube 83 mounted adjacent tube 46. The cylinder is closed by a threaded fitting 30 which slidably engages the rod 28, the piston being held in a chosen volume position by a resilient clip 38 engaging in one of spaced holes 40 in rod 28, to meter the liquid. Alternatively clip 38 is removed and the piston moved until shoulder 41 strikes stop plate 33. A collapsible liquid container may be used instead of bottle 14, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown).
