Abstract

A vehicle steering wheel 1 may be removed from the steering column 2 for the purpose of immobilising the vehicle, this preventing theft of the vehicle. The steering wheel is releasably secured so as to slide on and off the end of the steering column when the catches a are retracted into the steering column head. Releasing the steering wheel may, in addition, activate a steering column lock and de-activate the vehicle ignition system. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Detachable steering wheel This invention relates to a detachable steering wheel.
Many anti-theft devices for vehicles exist in a form so as to make the vehicle undrivable by preventing turning of the steering wheel.
These devices have to be obtained separately, and removal of the device allows normal usage.
According to the present invention there is provided some means of releasably securing the steering wheel to the steering column, such that removal of the steering wheel renders the vehicle unsteerable, thereby preventing theft.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a part-sectioned view with the steering wheel secured on the steering column; Figure 2 shows a part-sectioned view with the steering wheel released and removed.
Referring to Fig. 1, the steering wheel 1 is secured to the steering column 2 by means of, for example, mortice and tenon type locking catches 3.
On operation of, for example, a key in a.
lock, (not shown) the locking catches 3 are withdrawn into the steering column 4, allowing removal of the steering wheel 1, as shown in Fig. 2. This may operate in conjunction with a steering column lock (not shown).
The operation of the key may, in addition, de-activate the vehicle ignition system, thus preventing inadvertent removal of the steering wheel while in motion. The steering wheel is replaced and secured by reversing the above steps.
1. A detachable steering wheel for a vehicle such that removal of the wheel would immobilise the vehicle by making it unsteerable.
2. A detachable steering wheel as claimed in claim 1 wherein the wheel is releasably secured by one or more catches activated by one or more keys.
3. A detachable steering wheel as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein removal of the steering wheel de-activates the vehicle ignition system.
4. A detachable steering wheel as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 or claim 3 whereby removal of the steering wheel activates a steering column lock.
5. A detachable steering wheel substantially as described herein with reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing.

Many anti-theft devices for vehicles exist in a form so as to make the vehicle undrivable by preventing turning of the steering wheel. These devices have to be obtained separately, and removal of the device allows normal usage. According to the present invention there is provided some means of releasably securing the steering wheel to the steering column, such that removal of the steering wheel renders the vehicle unsteerable, thereby preventing theft. A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a part-sectioned view with the steering wheel secured on the steering column; Figure 2 shows a part-sectioned view with the steering wheel released and removed. Referring to Fig. 1, the steering wheel 1 is secured to the steering column 2 by means of, for example, mortice and tenon type locking catches 3. 1. A detachable steering wheel for a vehicle such that removal of the wheel would immobilise the vehicle by making it unsteerable.

5. A detachable steering wheel substantially as described herein with reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing.
