Abstract
1,038,864. Preventing theft of vehicles; steering wheels. W. J. REYNOLDS. June 28, 1963 [April 3, 1962], No. 12650/62. Heading B7J. [Also in Division E2] Means for preventing unauthorized driving of road vehicles comprises in combination a steering wheel 10 having a central well with the base 8 of the well provided with a central opening 11 adapted to receive a steering shaft 1, means 12 rigid with the base and drivably engaging the shaft, a combination lock 17 having an outer casing 16 connected to the top of the steering shaft above said base a member 3, rigid with a fixed tubular member 2 surrounding the steering shaft, and having a bore 20 coaxial with and disposed below a bore 19 in the base, and a bolt 21 adapted to pass through the casing of the lock and occupy the two said bores to prevent the steering wheel from being turned, the bolt being releasably held by the lock in position to occupy the two bores. The casing 16 has a screw-threaded bore 15a to enable the easing to be threaded on to the screw-threaded end 6 of the steering shaft 1, the casing being received in the well in the steering wheel. The combination lock has a number of tumblers which in the locking position engage an annular groove 22 in the bolt 21, the position of the tumblers being controlled by finger-operated dials 23. To enable the bolt to be removed when it is released by the tumblers, a pin 24 is provided. A dummy bolt shorter than the bolt 21 can also be provided which is shorter than the bolt 21 so that it is long enough to pass into the bore 19 in the steering wheel but not long enough to enter the bore 20; the dummy bolt prevents the lock from being removed when the steering wheel is not locked to the tubular member 2. A flange 9a on the steering wheel prevents the bolt 21 from being cut.
