217,357. Dyson, W. H., Crowfoot, C., and Piper, W. March 29, 1923. Angular bending; working at specified temperatures.-The final cross-sectional form of a tube, wing or other constructional member for aircraft &c., made from stainless or other iron or steel sheet or strip of high elastic properties, is effected by bending in dies or rolls in a furnace heated to a tempering temperature so as to avoid subsequent springing open of the edges of the article. A flat or partly shaped hardened and tempered strip may be used, the temperature of the furnace being such as not to modify the original mechanical properties of the strip and being approximately the same as or lower than the temperature at which the strip was originally tempered. In some cases a temperature of 400‹ C. is suitable. In a modification the strip may be initially bent cold in a soft condition, further shaped in a furnace heated to hardening temperature, then hardened, and subsequently further shaped in a furnace heated to tempering temperature. The furnace may contain an inert atmosphere.
