Abstract
A reusable jack leg for raising and lowering containers includes two fixings 2 by which the jack leg 1 may be fixed to a container, each fixing including a shank 5 having a head 6 for mating with an oval hole provided in standard containers. The fixings are attached to the container by inserting the heads through the holes and rotating them through 90 DEG . The jack leg is attached to the fixings by projections 11 insertable in sleeves 3 and secured by pins 7 which pass through apertures 9 and 12 in the sleeves and projections respectively. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in and relating to jack legs
This invention relates to an improved jack leg for use in raising and lowering containers.
In many large transportation centres where containers are to be handled cranes are used. However in some areas it is not practical to use a crane and jack legs are used to raise and lower the containers to allow loading and unloading from a lorry. These jack legs are welded onto the base of a container.
Thus to raise or lower one container at least four jack legs are required which can prove very expensive.
According to this invention there is provided a reusable jack leg for raising and lowering containers, the jack leg including a fixing by which the jack leg may be fixed to a container, the fixing being readily detachable from the container.
This means that the jack leg can be used again. All standard containers have substantially oval holes which are used in handling the containers. These oval holes are situated at the top and at the bottom of the container and have become standard features on all containers.
Preferably the jack leg is attached to a container using these elongate holes. A mounting includes a projection which has a head of exactly the same shape as the hole and a narrower shank. The mounting is fixed to the container by inserting the head of the projection through the hole and rotating the mounting through 909. The mounting is then fixed in position on the jack leg so that the jack leg is now safely attached to the container but can easily be detached from the container.
Preferably the mounting includes a sleeve which is slidable onto a projection on the jack leg, the mounting being fixed into position by inserting a pin through holes in the sleeve and the projection.
Preferably each jack leg has at least two projections to allow the mounting to be fixed on to the jack leg to allow the top and the bottom of the container to be fixed into position. There are two standard sizes of containers which have different depths and so more preferably the jack leg has three projections spaced so that each size of container may be handled.
The mounting is preferably made of steel.
An example of a jack leg in accordance with the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure lisa perspective view of the mounting;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the jack leg without the mounting; and,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the head of the projection of the mounting.
A reusable jack leg comprises a first leg part 1 and two mountings 2 for fixing to a container. The mounting 2 comprises a rectangular sleeve 3 and a projection 4. The projection 4 has a cylindrical shank 5 and a larger elongate head 6. The shape of the head 6 is substantially oval and of exactly the same shape and size as the standard holes in a container.
An angled pin 7 is attached to the sleeve 3 by a chain 8 and passes through holes 9 in the sleeve. A hook 10 is situated on the sleeve 3 to handle any excess chain 8 to prevent it from getting tangled. The leg portion 1 includes three rectangular projections 11 which include a bore 12 passing through them. In use the head 6 of projection 4 is inserted into a hole in a container and is rotated through 90 . The sleeve 3 is then slid over projection 11 and the pin 7 is inserted through holes 9 and bore 12 to fix the leg in position on the container. The jack leg 1 may then be used to raise and lower the container.
The leg portion 1 shown is only the outer part of the jack leg, the inner sleeve 13 being only partially shown on Figure 2. The three projections 11 allow the jack leg to be attached to two different sizes of containers so that the jack leg is very flexible. When the container has been raised or lowered to the required position the leg portion may easily be removed from the mounting by removing the pin and sliding the projections from outside the sleeve 3.
The mountings 2 are then easily removed from the container by rotating the mounting through 90" so that the head portion 6 may pass out of the hole.
1. A reusable jack leg for raising and lower containers, the jack leg including a fixing by which the jack leg may be attached to a container, the fixing being readily detachable from the container.
2. A jack leg according to Claim 1 wherein the fixing includes a projection having a head shaped mate with the elongate holes of standard containers, said projection having a shank portion which is narrower than said head.
3. A jack leg according to Claim 2 wherein the fixing includes a sleeve which is slidable onto a projection on the jack leg, the fixing being fixed into position by inserting a pin through holes in the sleeve and the projection.
4. A jack leg according to Claim 3 wherein the jack leg has at least two projections whereby the fixing may be attached to the jack leg to fix the top and the bottom of the container into position.
5. A jack leg according to Claim 4 wherein the jack leg has three projections spaced so that a container of any size may be handled.
6. A jack leg according to Claim 1 and substantially as herein described.
7. A reusable jack leg substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
