Abstract
216,390. Watson, G. W. July 27, 1923. Reels and winches, rod.-A fishing reel has two centrifugally-operated brakes, one normally engaged to give an initial braking and disengaged as the reel rotates, the other normally disengaged and operating to give an increasing braking at high speeds. An optional check may also be provided. Braket-blocks 10, 11 carried by arms 12, 13 pivoted to the reel 1, Fig. 1, are adapted to engage respectively with rims 10<a>, 11<a> on a fixed casing 2, Fig. 2. Normally, block 10 is held in engagement by a spring 15 adjustable by a screw 17, and block 11 is held out of engagement by a similarly adjustable spring 16. When the reel is rotated, block 10 is moved out of, and block 11 into, engagement by centrifugal action. The reel has a bush 4 held on a spindle 3 by means of a releasable spring-pressed stud 8<a> carried by the casing 2 and engaging an annular recess 8 in the bush. The casing also carries a stud 25 provided with a brake-block 23 adapted to engage the inner face of the reel drum to provide a check. Normally, block 23 is held out of engagement by the stud 25 being accommodated in one branch of an L- shaped slot in the casing 2, but when the stud is displaced by means of a thumb-piece 24 into register with the other branch of the slot, the block is pressed into engagement by spring 26. Springs 15, 16 may be omitted and both blocks 10, 11 adapted to engage a single rim.
