Abstract

Chucks; mandrels. - Chucks or work-holders consist of concentric sleeves 10, 23, which are thrust asunder by wedging action produced by a relative angular displacement, so that either the inner one 10 is contracted or the outer one 23 is expanded into gripping engagement. Balls 25 held in a spiral groove 24 in the sleeve 23 project into a like spiral groove 12 in the sleeve 10, the groove 12 having taper flanks as shown in Fig. 1. Thrust bearings 14 &c. prevent relative axial displacement of the sleeves. Thus when a relative turning is imposed, the balls 25 ride up on the inclined flanks of the spirals 12 so as to generate the gripping pressure. Such relative turning may be produced by a toggle 35, Fig. 5, or by a pair of oppositely-acting toggles, assisted by the driving torque. Such toggles are controlled by a loose slider 33 with slotted plates 34 engaging the toggles.
