Abstract
215,818. Chadwick, E. L. Feb. 10, 1923. Cutting edges, shaping and treating; gauges.- A device for supporting a chisel, gouge, plane blade, or like tool at the correct angle for sharpening on an oilstone comprises a frame 8 having at one end spaced webs 7 for reception of the blade and at the other end a boss 9 in which is mounted an axially-adjustable and graduated rod 10 carrying a roller 13 or a knob adapted to run on the surface of a bench upon which the oilstone rests. The webs 7 are connected by rods 5, 6, the upper of which, 5, has pivoted thereon a plate 3 carrying a screw 2; the blade is held by the screw against a cross web 14 of the frame, and against the rod 6 by the lower end of the plate 3. The plate 3 may have secured thereto a flexible plate 17, Fig. 3, which is pressed by the screw 2 to grip the blade when this has a slot which would prevent gripping by the screw; or the screw point may carry a washer large enough to bridge theslot. Secured to the plate 3 is an edge-setting pointer 15, which in conjunction with the graduation marks on the rod 10 enables the tool to be set always at the same or at any required angle. The rods 5, 6 may be replaced by lugs and a bar integral with the frame.
