Fats and fatty oils and waxes, extracting by solvents.-Apparatus for extracting oils, fats, and waxes comprises a countercurrent extractor and a continuous rotary steamer for recovering the solvent. In the apparatus shown, oily material from a hopper e is conveyed through cylinder a against solvent passing from an inlet h to an outlet i connected to a still or other separator. The treated material falls down a pipe k and is delivered by a feeder k<1> and conveyer l to a steamer q rotated by the hollow shaft m of the conveyer through a spiderframe w<1>. The material is withdrawn by a drag conveyer 8 and discharged through a pipe 4, the solvent &c. vapours passing through a pipe 3 to a. condenser &c. The steamer is provided with helical ribs t, and with pipes u<2> open at the inner end and a closed pipe u<3> which receive steam from a distributing box u<1> fed by a pipe u passing through the shaft of the conveyer. To control the humidity of the atmosphere in the steamer q each pipe u<2> is closed by a valve v, which is momentarily opened as it passes a cam v<1> on each revolution of the steamer. Solvent vapour is prevented from escaping through the pipes k, 4 e by material accumulated above the feeders k<1>, 5, f. The shaft of the conveyer c may be formed as a steam pins to heat the contents of the extractor.
