Abstract

214,789. Midgley, F. March 10, 1923. Smoke, consuming.-In a steam-boiler furnace the smoke and gases, before they escape from the boiler flues, are subjected to the action of flames from an auxiliary coke-fire furnace. As shown in Fig. 2, the auxiliary furnace comprises a hopper 1 leading to a passage 4 arrranged above a pivoted inclined grate 7 and travelling grate 8 mounted on a truck 9. Combustion products and flames are passed through an upwardly-inclined passage 11 to a passage 12 which gradually decreases in sectional area to a constricted portion and then increases in area to cause the flaming gases to be discharged into the smoke flues with considerable velocity.
