Abstract
A lamp of a Christmas lighting set includes a plastics holder 1 receiving a glass bulb 2 and insertable into a socket. The holder 1 has an internal annular surface portion 11 of oval cross-section including two downwardly converging surface portions 10 which wedgingly receive between them a lobe 4 of the bulb 2, whereby the bulb 2 is frictionally retained in the holder 1 and is prevented from being rotated about the vertical lamp axis relative to the holder 1. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to electric lamp bulbs
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a holder for an electric lamp bulb, including internal surface means shaped to receive and contact said bulb, said surface means being of a dimension in one diametral direction significantly smaller than a dimension in a diametral direction substantially perpendicular to said one diametral direction for receiving a correspondingly dimensioned bulb part.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided an electric lamp bulb including an annular external surface portion shaped to be received by and contact a bulb holder, said surface portion being of a dimension in one diametral direction significantly smaller than a dimension in a diametral direction substantially perpendicular to said one diametral direction for being received by correspondingly dimensioned internal surface means of said bulb holder.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, there is provided a combination comprising a bulb holder including internal surface means of a dimension in one diametral direction significantly smaller than a dimension in a diametral direction substantially perpendicular to said one diametral direction, and an electric lamp bulb substantially coaxial with said holder and including an annular external surface portion received by and contacting said internal surface means and of a dimension in said one diametral direction significantly smaller than a dimension in said diametral direction substantially perpendicular thereto, whereby said holder and said bulb are retained against rotation relative to each other about their axis.
The ratio of the dimension of the bulb holder and the bulb in the one diametral direction to the dimension in the substantially perpendicular diametral direction is advantageously between 4:5 and 2:5, preferably about 3:5.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows an axial sectional view through a holder with an electric bulb inserted therein and forming part of a lamp of a
Christmas lighting set, and
Figure 2 shows an axial section, in a plane perpendicular to the plane of Fig. 1, through the holder with the bulb inserted therein.
Referring to the drawing, each lamp of the
Christmas lighting set includes a bulb holder 1 of plastics and containing a glass bulb 2.
The bulb 2 is generally of circular cylindrical form and has an evacuated interior sealed at its upper end 3 and at its lower end by a solid glass lobe 4. Two thin wire conductors 5 extend upwardly through the lobe 4 in a sealed manner, are reinforced above the lobe 4 by a glass blob 6 and are connected to respective ends of a filament 7 in the evacuated interior of the bulb 2. The holder 1 is a one-piece moulding and has a hollow interior at the top of which is an annular surface portion 8 of circular cross-section for closely receiving a correspondingly shaped part of the bulb 2. The surface portion 8 merges into two upwardly facing shoulders 9 which extend parallely to the plane of Fig. 2; these then merge into two surface portions 10 which face each other and which converge slightly towards each other downwardly. These surface portions 10 form parts of an annular surface portion 11 of oval cross-section. The surface portion 11 merges downwardly into two upwardly-facing shoulders 1 2 which extend parallelly to the plane of Fig. 1 and which, with the surface portions 10, are followed by an annular surface portion 1 3 of oval cross-section. The surface portion 1 3 extends to the lower extremity of the holder 1, where it is integral with a transverse web 14 extending in the plane of Fig. 1. The lobe 4 is of a maximum transverse dimension in the plane of Fig. 1 significantly less than its maximum transverse dimension in the plane of Fig. 2. Similarly, the annular surface portion 11 is correspondingly dimensioned, the surface portions 10 resiliently gripping the lobe 4 between them.In fact, the lobe 4 is generally of a transverse dimension in the plane of Fig. 1 of about 3/5ths of its transverse dimension in the plane of Fig. 2.
The shoulders 9 abut against the bulb 2 where it widens out above the lobe 4 in the plane of Fig. 1, whilst the shoulders 1 2 abut against lower surface portions of the lobe 4.
The conductors 5 extend past respective opposite sides of the web 14 to project downwards from the lower end of the holder 1 in order to come into contact with electrical terminal plates (not shown) of the lamp.
The wedging of the lobe 4 between the surface portions 10 has the particular advantage that it prevents rotation of the bulb 2 relative to the holder 1 about their common axis and thus prevents electrical failure owing to the conductors 5 thereby being brought into contact with each other. Another advantage is that the orientation of the lobe 4 by means of the shoulders 9 and the surface portions 10 during insertion of the bulb 2 into the holder 1 encourages correct alignment of the conductors 5 relative to the web 14.
Not only is the lower end of the bulb 2 of a non-circular cross-section to co-operate with a correspondingly shaped part of the holder 1, as above described, but also the holder 1 is of a non-circular cross-section to co-operate with a correspondingly shaped part of a holder (not shown) for the holder 1, whereby rotation of the holder 1 relative to the non-illustrated holder about their common axis is also prevented.
