Abstract

1,204,624. Capping incandescent and discharge lamps. THORN LIGHTING Ltd. 20 Feb., 1969 [22 Feb., 1968], No. 8728/68. Headings H1D and H1F. An electric lamp, having its envelope closed by a wedge seal through which at least one terminal lead passes, is fitted with an end cap formed with seating structures which receive and support the wedge seal, and the or each terminal lead is secured to the cap so as to hold the seal against the structures and prevent relative axial movement between the envelope and the cap. The figure shows an incandescent filament lamp having an envelope 12 closed by a wedge seal 14 and a cap 17 having internal lugs 21-24 co-operating with the sides of the seal. The lugs are formed by making V-shaped cuts in the wall of the cap and bending the cut metal parts inwardly, the cuts being so located and formed that the lugs fit the sides of the seal. The lead wires 15 pass through holes in the base 18 of the cap where they are welded or soldered to the cap. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the seating structures are constituted by an annular ring of suitable material sealed within the cap and provided with tapered recesses to receive the wedge seal. In a further modification, Figs. 6-8 (not shown), the cut-out lugs of the first embodiment are replaced by two pairs of indentations on the side wall of the cap. The invention may also be applied to fluorescent and discharge lamps and the caps may be of the bayonet, Edison screw or two-pin type.
