Abstract

A process for producing elastic yarns, wherein a covering or coating step is carried out by a flocculating operation and causing a predetermined amount of flocks to adhere on the surface of natural and/or synthetic elastomer thread after suitable preparation of the elastomer thread surface for sufficient adhesion to the flocks, optionally followed by a thermal and/or chemical and/or pneumatic treatment for final adhesion and attachment of the flocks to the elastomer surface.

Description

SPECIFICATION Process for producing coated elastic yarns This invention relates to a process for producing covered or coated elastic yarns.
As is well known, coating techniques for producing elastic yarns coated with natural, artificial and synthetic yarns are known. Such a coating has many advantages, such as for example: (1) Protection of the uncoated elastomer thread against mechanical actions to which it will be subjected in the course of successive processing.
(2) Protection of the elastomer thread against weather and chemical agents which could impair the elastic characteristics thereof.
(3) Conferment of a textile coat to the elastomer thread.
(4) Limitation of the thread elongation to lower rates than the ultimate elongation thereof (5) Coating of the elastomer thread, which is usually commercially available in black and white, with raw and dyed textile yarns, to provide a colour effect close to that of the finished garment to be worn.
The techniques hitherto known for providing such a desirable coating are not fully satisfactory.
One known technique provides that natural artificial and synthetic yarns to serve as a coating for elastomer threads, and from both raw and dyed stock of spinners and dyeing plants are transferred by a winding operation from the spinning arrangement thereof onto suitable spools. The means containing the yarns to be coated are then mounted on rotating spindles of coating machines, which spindles by suitable conveniently controlled rotation will provide for winding about the elastomer of the fabric or textile yarns which had been previously wound on the spools. A coated elastomer yarn thus obtained, comprising two or more elements (elastomer plus one or more coatings) is wound by the same machine on suitable packages intended for customers.
The technical disadvantages of this conventional coating process may be summarized as follows.
(a) High cost of production, -due to labour; -power consumption; -and puchase of raw materials for coating.
(b) High maintenance cost of the coating machinery.
(c) High percentage of discards, scraps and by-selections of the process.
Therefore, the present invention aims to privide a coating system or process for natural and/or synthetic elastomer thread having square, rectangular or circular mono- and multifilament section, by deposition of natural, synthetic or artificial textile fibers or flocks, cut to different lengths, thus completey dispensing with spooling and winding operations of the coating elements about the elastomer, as provided in the above-mentioned conventional process.
The present invention provides a process for producing coated elastic yarns, wherein coating is carried out by flocculating and adhesion operations on the surface of natural and/or synthetic elastomer thread of a predetermined amount of flocks after preparation of the elastomer thread surface for sufficient adhesion thereof of the flocks with which it comes into contact, optionally followed by a thermal and /or chemical and/or pneumatic treatment for final adhesion and attachment of the flocks to the elastomer surface.
In the process according to the invention the covering or coating step is carried out by flocculating operations and adhesion on the surface of the natural or synthetic or artificial elastomer thread of a predetermined amount of fibres or flocks, with the use of suitable equipment, and wherein the attachment and /or adhesion effect of the fibres/flocks to the surface of the elastomer thread is further promoted by a suitable preparation of the surface of the elastomer, which should be sufficiently adhesive to retain the fibres/flocks coming in contact therewith.
By way of example, the surface preparation and flock attachment operations on an elastomer thread may be carried out as follows.
(a) For natural elastomer threads of circular, square and rectangular section obtained by an extrusion process: -after the coagulation acid containing tank and/or before washing; -during and/or after washing, but before drying; during and/or after drying; during and/or after curing; during and/or after packaging during and/or after transfer of the elastomer thread from the original make of the production line, on any other make as commercially required.
(b) For natural elastomer threads of square and rectangular section obtained by calendering and cut leaf: during and/or after calendering; during and/or after curing in hot air; during and/or after cutting of the calen- dered foil; -during and/or after transfer of the elastomer thread from the original pack of the production line on any other pack commercially required.
(c) For synthetic elastomer threads of monoand multifilament section, obtained by a wet and/or dry spinning process: before and/or during extrusion and/or recticulation and/or polymerization; -after polymerization and in any case on already completely polymerized thread; ---during and/or after transfer of the elastomer thread from the original pack of the production line on any other pack commercially requested.
In the process of the invention, the flocks may be obtained by cutting or grinding or discards of natural, artificial or synthetic flocks.
