Abstract

Artificial silk is rendered more resistant to the wetting action of water by treatment with dry chlorine whilst avoiding the presence of moisture; the chlorine may be employed as a gas or dissolved in an organic solvent such as benzene. The water-resisting properties of the material are increased by treatment with wax, and this treatment may take place subsequently to or simultaneously with the treatment with dry chlorine; the wax may be dissolved in the solvent for the chlorine. In the examples the material to be treated is subjected to a more or less prolonged preliminary drying operation.
