Abstract

213,587. Ges. f³r Nautische Instrumente. March 26, 1923, [Convention date]. Gas analysis. - A combustion chamber in which explosive gas mixtures are quietly burnt by a heated filament, electric spark, &c. has part of the wall formed of highly porous stone or similar refractory material which prevents high pressures in the chamber or passage of flame from the chamber. The porous material may be formed by sintering coarse glass powder or by kneading clay with sawdust &c. and burning. The chamber may comprise a glass cylinder A closed by porous stone B and held in a perforated metal casing C by a threaded, ring D. An electrically heated filament of platinum, palladium, &c. may be arranged in the cylinder. An excessive amount of hydrogen, for example, in the atmosphere is indicated by periodic flames. A fire-damp indicator, which may be surrounded by a chamber constructed as above, comprises a metal chamber G closed by a stone M of low permeability and connected by a thick-walled manometer J to a vessel K closed by a stone L of high permeability. Fire-damp passes through the cover M and is burnt by a heated filament N and the products of combustion being absorbed in material O impregnated with potash solution &c., an indication is given by the manometer. The fire-damp indicator may be combined with a miners' lamp. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the platinum or other filament mav be coated with cerium oxide or the like to prevent products of combustion from attacking the filament. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
