Abstract

Metal bars 2 with indentations 1 on two opposing sides, the said bars being intended particularly, but not exclusively, for the manufacture of gratings in which the indentations have a non-slip function, are formed between a pair of rollers with peripheral teeth which are designed to produce indentations in the opposing sides of the bars. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Process and Equipment for the Forming of Metal Bars with Indentations.on Two Opposing Sides In the manufacture of grids or similar metal structures the use of metal bars having indentations made in one side only with the object of providing a non-slip function has already been proposed. Accordingly metal bars with indentations on one side only, produced by shearing, and metal bars with indentations again on one side only, produced with equipment capable of removing material from the bars in order to produce the indentations, are already known. Both cases however, require specific production equipment and additional production time and cost in addition to that involved in the rolling of ordinary bars.Furthermore in the present state of the art it is not possible to proceed otherwise as the production of indentations on one side only simultaneously with rolling of the bars adversely affects linearity in the forming of the bars themselves.
Another object of the invention is to aid the operator in the assembly of bars for the manufacture of gratings and similar products because it is no longer necessary to pay attention to the consequent location of the indentations on one side rather than the other, since the bars, as mentioned above, are provided with indentations on both sides.
According to the present invention there is provided a process for forming metal bars with non-slip indentations on two opposing sides wherein lateral indentations are formed directly during rolling of the bars by passing the said bars between a pair of rollers with peripheral teeth piaced in the rolling train for the said bars.
The object of this invention therefore is to make provision for the forming of metal bars provided with indentations on both sides during the said operation of the rolling of bars of normal rectangular cross-section and therefore without the need for special equipment and without incurring additional manufacturing time and costs in addition to those relating to rolling.
Another object of the invention is to seek to provide for the forming of non-slip metal bars in particular if not exclusively for gratings which are finished at the end of the rolling process without the need for further forming or other working apart from assembly into gratings or the like.
The present invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a diagram illustrating the passage of a metal bar through two rollers forming the indentations on the sides of the said bar; Fig. 2 shows a front view of the said rollers mounted as part of a rolling plant; and Fig. 3 shows a transverse cross-section between the arrows Ill-Ill in Fig. 2.
The process of the invention consists substantially of making indentations 1 on the opposing sides or flanks of a metal bar 2 during the operation in which the bar itself is rolled, and in particular immediately prior to the last rolling pass.
For this purpose the rolling train for metal bar 2 includes a pair of rollers 3-3 having parallel vertical axes, which are suitably supported and controlled so as to rotate in opposite directions, arrows F in Figure 3, each having at least one peripheral toothed region 4-4.
When rolled, the metal bar 2 is passed between the pair of rollers 3-3 in such a way that its sides or flanks are engaged by the peripheral teeth 4--4 on these rollers. Teeth 44 produce corresponding indentations 1 on the sides of the bar as it moves forward with the result that when rolling is complete the bar is provided with lateral indentations and requires no further forming.
Bars manufactured in this way are particularly suitable, once they have been cut into appropriate lengths, for the manufacture of gratings, grids and the like in which the indentations 4 in the bars form, when connected together by means of welded ties in a known way, a non-slip walking surface.
1. A process for forming metal bars with nonslip indentations on two opposing sides, wherein lateral indentations are formed directly during rolling of the bars by passing the said bars between a pair of rollers (3-3) with peripheral teeth (4-4) placed in the rolling train for the said bars.
2. An apparatus for forming metal bars with non-slip indentations on two opposing sides, comprising a pair of rollers (3-3) having parallel vertical axes, controlled so as to rotate in opposite directions and each having a toothed peripheral region (4-4) to act against the sides of the bar in question and produce indentations in the bar.
3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 2, in which the said pair of rollers (3-3) have a peripheral toothed region (4-4) is located within the rolling train for the metal bars, preferably before the last rolling pass.
4. A process for forming metal bars with nonslip indentations on two opposing sides, substantially as herein described.
5. An apparatus for forming metal bars with non-slip indentations on two opposing sides, substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
