Abstract

Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; connected to source of low-pressure.-In packing for turbine or other rotating shafts having a stationary packing element 32 separated by an annular space from a carrier 30, the working fluid has access also to annular spaces between a carrier 15, on the shaft and, packing elements 22, 23, and also between the carrier 15 and the shaft. The carrier 15 is formed in two parts and is secured at its middle against a shoulder 9 on the shaft by a ring 18, annular spaces being left between the carrier and the ring 18 and shaft. Elements 22, 23 having packing teeth are secured to the free ends of the carrier 15, preferably by welding, the elements 22, 23 being separated by a space 28 which admits working fluid to the spaces 27. A stationary element 32, having packing teeth, is secured at one end to a carrier 30, secured to the casing 7. Another packing element 35 is attached to a housing 37, secured to the casing 7. The housing is formed with passages 39, 40 for conducting away leakage.
