After a bore (30) has been drilled to receive the rearwardly projecting part (15) shallow recesses (31) can be drilled (preferably with the same drill) on either side to receive the rounded end portions (12) of the mounting plate (10), the surplus material (32) having been removed to complete the rebate necessary to receive the plate (10). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Door and window fittings
This invention relates to door and window fittings of the kind which include at least one mounting plate with a part which projects from the in-use rear face thereof and is required to be recessed into a door or window or into a surrounding frame. Examples of such fittings include various types of locks, latches and internally fitting bolts, as well as the type of door closer described in British Patent Specification No.
2,044,840A. Such door closers consist basically of a spring actuating mechanism enclosed within a tube which is fitted within the thickness of the door and carries at its outer end a mounting plate which is recessed in the hinged edge of the door, the mechanism being coupled to an anchor plate which is recessed in the corresponding edge of the door frame.
The installation of such door closers requires a hole of the appropriate size to receive the tube to be drilled in the door and also the formation of a rebate around the hole to receive the mounting plate. Similar operations are required on the frame to fit the anchor plate. The formation of the rebate is a relatively skilled operation where, as is normal, the plates are rectangular in shape. The same is true in relation to the fitting of locks or the like having rectangular plates to be recessed into the door or frame edge.
According to the present invention, we provide a door or window fitting of the kind which includes at least one mounting plate with a part which projects from the in-use rear face thereof and is required to be recessed into a door or window or into a surrounding frame, wherein the mounting plate has a central portion and rounded end portions, each end portion being of substantially semi-circular shape with a diameter substantially equal to the width of the central portion.
Preferably, the overall length of the plate is less than 3 times the width of the central portion.
Most conveniently, the central portion is paraliel sided.
Where the mounting plate is part of a fitting which includes a member adapted to be housed within a bore, the width of the central part of the mounting plate, and the diameter of the end parts are preferably equal to the diameter of the required bore.
By forming the mounting plate in accordance with the invention, the required rebate can be formed quite simply by first drilling the required bore (where necessary) and then, usually with the same drill bit, forming shallow recesses on either side, leaving only smali substantially triangular areas to be removed between the drilled-out portions in order to complete the rebate required to house the mounting plate. To facilitate these operations, a simple template may be provided to provide an indication of the centres on which drilling is required.
According to the invention, we also provide a method of installing a door or window fitting of the kind which includes at least one mounting plate with a part which projects from the in-use rear face thereof and is required to be recessed into a door or window or into a surrounding frame, wherein the mounting plate has a central portion and rounded end portions, each end portion being of substantially semi-circular shape with a diameter substantially equal to the width of the central portion, comprising the steps of drilling a bore of dimensions adapted to receive said rearwardly projecting part of the fitting, drilling out shallow recesses on either side of such bore of dimensions adapted to receive the end portions of the mounting plate, and removing further material to complete the formation of a rebate adapted to receive the central portion of the mounting plate.
The invention further resides in a door or window installation comprising a doqr or window and a surrounding frame wherein at least one fitting is recessed into the door, window or frame, said fitting having a mounting plate which has a central portion and rounded end portions, each end portion being of substantially semi-circular shape with a diameter substantially equal to the width of the central portion, the end portions of the mounting plate being received within rebates formed by drilling shallow recesses of diameters substantially equal to the diameter of said end portions.
The invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: FIGURE 1 illustrates a door closer having a mounting plate in accordance with the invention; and
FIGURE 2 illustrates the manner in which a rebate to receive the mounting plate of such door closer may be formed.
As illustrated, the door closer in accordance with the invention includes a first mounting plate 10 which carries at the rearward side thereof a tubular housing 1 5 which contains a known type of spring actuated operating mechanism. The mechanism includes an articulated chain 1 6 which is coupled at its outer end to a second mounting, or anchor, plate 20, which is similar in shape and dimensions to the mounting plate 10.
The mounting plate 10 includes a central portion 11 having parallel sides 11 a spaced apart by a distance somewhat greater than the external diameter of the housing 1 5, so that a bore 30 formed in the door with a diameter equal to the width of the central portion 11 will accommodate the tubular housing 1 5 with minimum clearance.
The mounting plate 10 includes semi-circular end portions 12 having end edges 1 2a in the form of a semi-circle whose diameter is equal to the width of the central portion.
In order to form a rebate to receive the plate 10, shallow holes 31 can be drilled adjacent to the bore 30. Preferably, the overall length of the mounting plate is less than three times the width of the central portion so that the shallow holes 31 are in overlapping relation with the bore 30, as shown in Figure 2. It is then a simple matter to remove the generally triangular areas of material 32 in order to complete the rebate necessary to receive the plate 10.
The anchor plate 20 can be fitted in a similar manner.
It will be appreciated that other types of door and window fitting as previously mentioned can be provided with a mounting plate in accordance with the invention in order to facilitate installation thereof. Thus the fitting may incorporate a tubular housing with a diameter substantially smaller than the width of the required mounting plate, so that in this case it would be appropriate to drill out a circular rebate at the mouth of the narrower bore to accommodate the central part of the mounting plate. A similar expedient may be adopted where the fitting is of a kind in which the rearwardly projecting part is not tubular but requires, for example, a rectangular rebate to be
formed, or where the plate does not carry any rearwardly projecting part, in both such cases a central shallow hole being drilled out as necessary in between the two holes drilled to receive the end portions of the mounting plate.
Whilst the mounting plate in accordance with the invention preferably has end portions with a diameter equal to the width of the straight sided central portion, as shown, it would be possible for the end portions to be of slightly differing diameter and/or not truly semi-circular in shape. Likewise, the edges of the central portion need not always be straight, but under some circumstances could be curved convexly or concavely.
