Grates.-A method of firing furnaces with fuels of low calarific value and high water content consists in controlling the rate of travel of an endless stepped grate surface, constituted by horizontal treads moving downwards, and so inclining the grate that the fuel slides downwards at the optimum speed for the given fuel under the action of gravity assisted by that of the grate, while the ash is carried to the lower end of the furnace at such a rate that the removal and deposition of the ash are balanced without accumulation of ash on the grate surface Fig. 1 shows a grate for carrying out the invention comprising pivoted bare 14 supported at the sides on travelling chains 3. The inclination of the grate may be adjusted by a screw 19 and the tension of the chains may be varied by set-screws 20.
