Abstract

211,907. Walton, T. Sept. 4, 1922. Rotary machines; inking - apparatus; damping - apparatus. -A rotary lithographic machine is constructed with the moisture and ink-applying surfaces carried by a single rotary member which preierablv also carries a rubber surface which acts as an impression surface to receive the sheet to be printed, or which acts as an offset surface and prints in coaction with a rotary impression member. The rotary member i, Fig. 1, is formed of built-up sections, or as a single unit, and is mounted in a frame formed with a platform c for the driving-motor d, with a receptacle b for the printed sheets, and with brackets e for the operator's platform f. The member i is divided into three sectors A<1> A<2>, A<3>, which may all be covered with rubber, the sector A<1> being arranged to pick up moisture from a roller m<1> on a lever n operated by a cam o on the member i, and the sector A<2> picks up ink from a similarly mounted rollers r on an oscillating lever s. The roller r receives ink from a distributing-roller q supplied by a messenger roller 2 and fitted with axially reciprocating distributors 5, all the inking- rollers being driven from a countershaft u<2> driven hy worm gearing from the motor d. For direct printing, sheets are fed by the aid of a front stop 21 and dropping rollers 20 to the sector A<3>, and a lithographic printing roller p is mounted in the position shown and adjusted by a nut 10. This roller is first damped by the sector A<1>, inked bv the sector A<2>, and then prints on the sheet carried by the sector A<3>. For offset printing an impression roller 14 is used and this is also adjustable by a nut, the printing being effected between the sector A<3> and impression roller 14. For printing both sides of a sheet simultaneously, the roller 14 is replaced by a printing-roller, and the roller p is used to print an offset impression on to the sector A<3>. The rollers 14, p are fitted with means to trip them when they are not required to operate. The roller p is driven by friction from the shaft of the member i, but is fitted with gear teeth 12, Fig. 10, to co-operate with gear blocks 13 on the member i to ensure correct register. The sector A<2> may receive ink from rollers which are supplied bv a messenger roller direct from a duct roller, and the ink is in this case distributed on the sector A<2> by rollers 5 which are moved to and from the sector A<2> by a cam.
