Abstract

Castings are obtained from borax by adding substances adapted to facilitate melting without appreciable loss of water by crystallization, e.g. as caustic soda or potash, boracic acid, metaborates, phosphoric acid, carbonates &c. For example, 200 grams of powdered borax are mixed with 40 grams powdered boracic acid and heated with stirring on a steam or water bath. Other examples comprise, in substitution for the boracic acid, 40 grams of (a) powdered caustic soda, or (b) phosphoric salt Na NH4 HPO4, 4 H2O.
