Abstract

An ironing board comprises a member 1 forming a working surface which is mounted on a leg assembly 2, 3 which is pivoted at 4 so that, in a storage position, it can occupy a position against the underside of the member 1, and a rest 8 for an iron which is mounted on slide members 5 and 6 on the underside of the working surface member 1 and which is connected for actuation thereof to the leg assembly by members 8 to 84, 9, 10, 11 and 12, enabling the rest 8 to extend beyond the member 1 in the working condition of the ironing board and be retracted beneath the member 1 in the storage condition of the ironing board. The leg assembly comprises two pairs of legs 2, 3 pivoted at 4 and with the legs 2 pivoted at 2, to the member 1 and the legs 3 carrying rollers 7 slidable in the members 5, 6. The rest 8 is connected to the leg assembly by a rod 11 extending into elongate apertures 9, 10, in arms 9, 10 connected to the rest 8. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Ironing board This invention relates to an ironing board.
According to the present invention there is provided an ironing board comprising a member forming a working surface and which is mounted on a leg assembly which can be pivoted between a working position in which it supports the member forming the working surface and a storage position in which it occupies a position against the underside of the member forming the working surface, and a rest means for an iron which is mounted on slide members provided on the underside of the member forming a working surface and which is connected for actuationthereoftothe leg assembly so that the rest means extends beyond the member forming the working surface when the leg assembly is in the working position and is retracted beneath the underside of said member when the leg assembly is in the storage position.
In accordance with a feature of the invention, the rest means for an iron is connected to the leg assembly by a member which extends through an elongate aperture provided in at least one connecting arm connected to the rest means.
In accordance with another feature of the invention, the leg assembly comprises two pairs of leg elements which are pivotally connected together at their centre, one of said pairs of leg elements being pivotably connected at one of its ends to the member forming the working surface of the ironing board and the other of said pairs of leg elements is slideably mounted at one of its ends in slide members and is connected to the member which extends through the elongate aperture in the connecting arm.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of a non-limiting example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of the ironing board according to the invention, Figure 2 is a perspective view of the board of Figure 1, with the member forming the working surface removed, and Figure 3 is a perspective view of part of the board of Figure 2, with the remainder of the board being omitted.
The invention concerns an ironing board which is provided with a rest means for an iron which means is retractable so that it is automatically moved into a position in which it is outside of the overall outline of the working surface of the board when the board is in the position for use and is automatically moved into a position within the outline of the board working surface when the ironing board is folded into a storage position.
Referring to Figure 1, the ironing board comprises a member 1 forming a working surface and which is supported by a leg assembly comprising two pairs of elements 2 and 3 which are pivotally connected to each other at their centre at 4.
Fixed to the underside of the member 1 are two parallel slide members 5 and 6 which each consist of a U-shaped member, with the open sides of the U-shaped members being directed towards each other. The end 2, of the pair of leg elements 2 is pivotably secured to the slide members 5 and 6 while the end 31 of the pair of leg elements 3 is slidably mounted, for example by means of rollers 7, within the two slide members 5 and 6.
The rest means 8 for an iron is formed of bent metal wires and is extended by two rods 8, and 82 connected by transverse rod members 83 and 84.
The transverse rod members 83 and 84 are slidably disposed in the slide members 5 and 6 so that the rest means 8 can occupy a position either beyond the adjacent end of the working surface member 1 or, a position below the working surface member 1.
The transverse member 84 is also connected at its ends to two arms 9 and 10 which are also slideable in the slide members 5 and 6 and which are provided with a respective elongate aperture 9, and 101.
The ends of a rod 11 which is connected by means of its central region to a rack 12 are displaceable within the elongate apertures 9, and 10,. The rack 12 is connected to a transverse member 13 connecting the two parallel arms forming the elements 3 of the leg assembly.
A locking member 14 comes into engagement with the teeth of the rack 12. The locking member 14 comprises for example a rod which is folded or bent into a U-shaped configuration and which is mounted for pivotal movement by means of an operating handle (not shown), against the force of a spring (not shown), below the working surface member 1.
The length of the elongate apertures 9" 10, in the arms 9 and 10 is such that said length, added to the length of the movement of the iron rest means 8, corresponds to the maximum displacement of the rollers 7 in the slide members 5 and 6.
When the ironing board is folded into the storage position, it is sufficient for the locking member 14 to be pivoted by the handle so as to disengage it from the teeth of the rack 12, thereby permitting the rollers 7 to roll in the slide members 5 and 6 until the leg elements 2 and 3 are in a folded or collapsed position parallel to each other in the same plane below the working surface member 1.
Before the end of the above-indicated movement, the transverse member 11 comes into abutment against one end of each of the elongate apertures 91 and 10, and applies a pulling force to the iron rest means 8 which thus slides in the slide members 5 and6.
On the other hand, when the ironing board is put into its position of use, the pivotal connection of the leg elements 2 and 3 to each other causes the rollers 7 to roll in the opposite direction in the slide members 5 and 6, the effect of which is to push the rack 12 back towards the other end of the slide members 5 and 6.
When the transverse member 11 reaches the other end of each of the elongate apertures 9, and lOi, it pushes the arms 9 and 10 and the iron rest means 8 back until the latter is positioned beyond the end of the working surface member 1.
Therefore, by means of this mechanism, which is of a simple construction, the rest means for the iron is properly positioned in the position for use or for storage at the same time as the ironing board is set into the position for use or for storage.
