Description
SPECIFICATION
Lamp mountings
This invention relates to lamp mountings for table, standard, reading or like lights.
It is well known to incorporate a dimmer in a wall-mounted switch controlling ceiling or wall lights so that their brightness can be varied according to need. There is a similar, if not greater need, to vary the brightness of individual free-standlng lights in a room and it is an object of the present invention to fulfil this need.
According to the present invention there is provided a lamp mounting for a table, standard, reading or like light comprising, in combination, a socket for receiving the lamp and a dimmer.
The mounting is securable to the base or neck of the light in the normal way and the socket will normally be of the conventional bayonet or screw type although any means for holding a lamp are intended to be covered by the term "socket".
Preferably the mounting according to the invention also incorporates a switch and jt is convenient if this is operable by the same control as the dimmer.
Some embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which
Figure 1 is an elevation of a lamp mounting according to the invention;
Figure 2 is an elevation of a modification of the mounting of Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is an elevation showing components mounted on a printed circuit board and housed within the mounting of Figs. 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is side elevation of the board of Fig. 3; and
Figure 5 is a circuit diagram.
The lamp mounting 10 shown in Fig. 1 comprises a lower part 1 2 of a conventional lamp holder modified to be connected by a screw ring 14 to a terminally-threaded barrel 1 6 housing a dimmer. The upper part of the barrel 1 6 is connected by a further screw ring 1 8 to a bayonettype lamp socket 20, which is a modified upper part of a conventional lamp holder. The barrel 1 6 is apertured at 22 for a control knob (not shown).
The lamp mounting 23 shown in Fig. 2 comprises a lower casing portion 24 which is internally threaded at 26 to screw on to a stem (not shown) in the normal way and an upper casing portion 28 connected to the lower portion 24 by a screw ring 30 and to a bayonet-type socket 32 by a screw ring 34. A control knob 36 projects through an aperture in the lower portion 24.
Figs. 3 and 4 show the layout of a dimmer circuit which is housed within the body of the lamp mountings 10 and 23 and which achieves dimming by phase control regulation of the incoming AC mains waveform. The dimmer circuit components suitable for lamps of from 40 to 1 50 W are mounted on a printed circuit board 38 and are identified by the following references in Figs. 3 to 5::

R2 - 6.8us} R3 - 2209 VR1 470us2 Linearly variable resistor ) Coupled together and

C2 - .1 yF ,, D1 - DIAC T1 - TRIAC L1 - Inductor (350 turns 299 wire wound on Fe Core) S1 - Double pole mains switch controlled by control knob 36 T1 - Terminal block
The above-described circuit not only provides radio interference suppression and conforms to
BS 5518 for lamp dimmers, but also its compact layout enables it to be incorporated in a lamp holder which is very little larger that a conventional lamp holder and which is not therefore unsightly.
1. A lamp mounting for a table, standard, reading or like light comprising, in combination, a socket for receiving the lamp and control means for controlling, in use, the amount of light emitted by the lamp.
2. A mounting as claimed in Claim 1, in which the socket is of the bayonet type.
3. A mounting as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 and further comprising an on-off switch.
