Abstract

A composite container, specifically a beer barrel, comprises a stainless steel enclosure surrounded by a mild steel sheath. The stainless steel enclosure is formed in two flow-turned cup-shaped parts 14 and 16 welded together at their rims and the sheath 12 is also formed in two parts secured together in such manner that telescoping movement between the parts is prevented, each part of the sleeve also having an inward projection 70 or 72 contacting a respective end wall of the enclosure to prevent longitudinal movement of the enclosure within the sleeve. Any compressive stresses applied to the container by falling on one end are carried by the sleeve so as to prevent fracture of the enclosure. <IMAGE>
