Abstract
A continuous casting process includes the steps of forming a molten metal into a column using electromagnetic inductor (3), providing a protective medium of conducting slag (15), degassing flux molten metal different to that of the ingot, rarefied atmosphere or inert gases (e.g. through pipe (16)) and cooling the side surface of the solidified ingot unit ring (4). Apparatus comprises an internal shell (8) for holding the protective medium in place at the upper liquid portion (6) of the ingot (5); and advantageously an external shell (26) for holding a protective melt (15) or rarefied atmosphere at the liquid peripheral surface of the ingot (5), and a hand for sizing the solidifying skin of the ingot (5). <IMAGE>
