Abstract

For connection establishment in a centrally controlled telephone system, switching functions are effected between main states and each main state transition corresponds to a plurality of intermediate state transitions. Instead of storing all possible intermediate states including those for auxiliary functions which require visual or audible indication, only those intermediate states (ZZ1 to ZZ4) are held in a state store (ZL) which are essential for the main state transitions. A target main state selector (ZiZE) enables each main state transition (HZ3 to HZ4) to be defined for determination of the intermediate states essential for that transition and also for a setting-up routine (ER) to determine the auxiliary functions associated with, and in time for completion of, the main state transition. The initial or current main state of a transition is indicated by units (AG1 to AGn) respectively associated with traffic classes and to which a request (A) from a central control unit for the main state transition is allocated. <IMAGE>
