Abstract

A sulphurised polybutene containing at least 2 gram atoms of sulphur per mole of polybutene having at least 16 carbon atoms and a number average molecular weight of between 220 and 1000 is produced by reacting the corresponding polybutene with a molar excess of a sulphur-halide at a temperature between 0 DEG and 50 DEG C to form an intermediate di-(haloalkyl)sulphide derivative which in turn is reacted with a water-soluble inorganic polysulphide at a temperature above 60 DEG C. The sulphurised polybutenes are very effective additives for lubricating oils, gear oils, cutting oils and as extreme pressure additives.
