Abstract

1335740 Sulphurized tri-isobutylene TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 27 Nov 1971 55149/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] A process for preparing a sulphurized triisobutylene extreme pressure additive for lube oils, which has a reduced corrosivity to copper, comprises reacting tri-isobutylene with sulphur at 360-500‹ F. and a pressure between 0 and 100 p.s.i.g. but rising above 15 p.s.i.g. during at least part of the reaction period utilizing a mole ratio of tri-isobutylene to sulphur of 1 : 5 to 1 : 2À5, while blowing a gas inert to the reaction through the reaction mixture for at least part of the reaction period, and throughout the reaction period when the pressure exceeds 15 p.s.i.g., and continuing the reaction until the amount of free sulphur is less than 0À3 wt. per cent and recovering the sulphurized tri-isobutylene from the reaction mixture. The product contains principally 4-neopentyl-5- tertiary butyl-1, 2-dithiole-3-thione together with minor amounts of organic sulphides, e.g. polysulphides and residual mercaptans.
