Abstract

201,405. Tolson, C. G. July 28, 1922. Variable-speed gearing upon motor vehicles is provided with means for indicating relative tooth speeds to facilitate changing speeds. Revolution counters or speed indicators a<1>, a<2> are combined in one instrument to work two differently-coloured pointers l, l<1> over a dial D, which is graduated and marked by segments or arcs of different colour so as to permit a change at sight when the pointers are in proper relative positions upon the arcs. The indicators a<1>, a<2> are driven from the clutch and propeller shafts of the speed gear respectively, and actuate concentric spindles k<2>, k<3> carrying the pointers. The lengths of the coloured arcs on the dial D show intervals of difference of tooth speeds within which it is practicable to make a change.
