Abstract
An anthraquinone is prepared by oxidation of o-benzyltoluene with <IMAGE> nitric acid in two oxidation stages, the first oxidation stage being performed with a nitric acid of 25 to 50 weight-% strength under atmospheric pressure at temperatures of approximately 80 to 110 DEG C in the presence of known oxidation catalysts, after which the liquid oxidation product is further oxidised in the second oxidation stage with a nitric acid of 8 to 15 weight-% strength under a pressure of approximately 10 to 30 bar at temperatures of approximately 150 to 180 DEG C until cessation of nitrogen oxide evolution, the method also including the steps of esterifying the raw o-benzoylbenzoic acid with methanol, distilling the methyl ester, and converting the o-benzoylbenzoic methyl ester into anthraquinone by heating with concentrated sulphuric acid at a temperature of approximately 150 DEG C.
